There was a lot about this novel that I enjoyed: the diverse collection of characters, the pokes at conventional ideas about women's work, and even the unusual combination of first and third-person narratives.

This novel was a weak pick for me. I can't say I enjoyed reading the book but it was hard-hitting and felt very honest. I was going to abandon it at first but then wanted to see how the main character would evolve.

I really enjoyed this one! A translated work from Kuwait that is for book lovers. A great book for now with the book banning that is happening everyday. I love how Al-Essa weaves classics through the story, and how she shows what books can do for a person.
This was a super quick read that I tackled in 24 hours, highly readable and fun.

sarahbarnes Agreed! Great review. 4d
Butterfinger I just put it on hold. 4d

Hooked_on_books This was my favorite fiction book of 2024. I‘m amazed how she tackled such a heavy, often upsetting topic with such lightness. Wonderful book—I‘m so happy to see people reading it. 3d

#FeelinTheLove Day 3: There are #LoveIsBlind elements here between Daniel and Susannah as I find the latter insufferable at 200 pages in. I finished two other titles for the #ToB25 while reading this and I haven‘t even reached a third of the book - does it get better and is it worth slogging through? The characterization is on point but not in love yet with any of the characters.

LeslieO I love everything about this picture! 4d
Megabooks I enjoyed this book, but I think it was how much I love the narrator of the audiobook that really pushed me through parts I enjoyed less. Love the picture!! 4d
squirrelbrain I enjoyed this more then I expected but it did feel very long so if you‘re not enjoying it at one third through…. 🤔 4d

Liked but didn‘t love this one. The protagonist‘s relationship with Samuel was really well written as were the real/not real elements. The way his relationship with his wife and son was described felt a little shallow and unfinished to me, I couldn‘t quite get a hold on it. Definitely a unique story overall and I‘m glad I read it. #tob25

#WeeklyForecast

I‘ll continue with my yearlong reads on the right

Continue The Valley of Fear #NoPlaceLikeHolmes and Rest is Resistance #SheSaid. It‘s also time to pick up Revelation again #ShardlakeBR

Continue listening to the tagged book

I think I‘ll DNF my current read and start on Headshot #tob25

And then I hope I have time for something else towards the end of the week

Library haul!

I already have 6 books out that I really need to get to, but these are #ToB25 and I feel like the tagged could be on the Women's Prize longlist for fiction

squirrelbrain Ooh yes, I forgot about Shy Creatures for the WP. I loved it, along with Liars. The Anthropologists was OK. (edited) 4d
ChaoticMissAdventures @squirrelbrain Clare Chambers has been on their lists before, so that is why I think she might pop up again. I am really curious about Anthropologists it feels like a book I would love, but could get annoyed with if it doesn't walk a certain line. At least it is short! 4d
squirrelbrain I liked it but didn‘t love it. It‘s quirky enough to make the list as well, though. 4d

In January, my focus was on doing what I felt like and not feeling guilty about it. Mostly I succeeded, which means I read a lot of books and played a lot of piano and only felt a mild undercurrent of guilt. #tob25 has been treating me well, even when I disagree about a couple of titles that I think should have made the shortlist. Only finished #doublespin, not #bookspin, but no (well, little) guilt!

Last #ToB25 book of the entire list of 18!! Woohoo 👏
I would love to find a list of all the connections between stories cuz I think I missed a few. #Jan2025 Book12 #Completist Litflu 47863

Suet624 I seem to remember there was one that didn‘t have a connection to any other but I can‘t remember which story it was. 🤷🏻‍♀️😂 congrats on making it through the longlist. 6d
BkClubCare @Suet624 - longlist?!?!! No, made it through the SHORT list 😁 6d

I love this collection of loosely connected stories. Not only is each story compelling on its own, but the arc of the set of stories as a whole is very satisfying. It's also interesting to read stories set in a part of the world where I lived and where I tried for several years to belong but didn't succeed. Another from the #tob25 shortlist.

Suet624 I loved this one. 6d
