pickI didn‘t expect to enjoy this nonfiction YA book. It turned out to be quite interesting! (I listened to the audiobook) Not only does the author go into detail about the history of the ship, but he delves into the history of those who captained it, the pirates who stole it, and many other side stories that related to the Whydah. I love fiction about pirates, so I figured I would give this particular nonfiction title a try, and I am glad I did.
I got the tagged book for Christmas (my sister is awesome) and used some of my Christmas gift card on the other three (my dad is also awesome). I‘ve been waiting forever to get this Riordan but now I have to wait on the new Percy books to come out in paperback 😢 and I decided to bite the bullet on Bride. I‘ve liked everything else I‘ve read by AH (which is everything but Check & Mate, which I‘m currently reading) so we‘ll see. #bookhaul
pickBeautiful story, so well written. I had never read anything about life at sea in the 1860s. Beth Browning is a wonderful Canadian author who managed to bring this time period to life. I will be reading her book “ The Sister‘s Tale” in the near future.
pickA fun and quick read! An adventure in which you can think as much or as little as you'd like. I haven't read too many graphic novels so this was a new experience that I rather enjoyed. It feels much different than an illustrated book.

pickThis is a sturdy novel about a Cold War destroyer captain who plays too close to the edge in games with a Soviet sub. A jaded rapscallion of a press liaison is on hand as the audience surrogate, watching with suspicion as the captain‘s fanatical (and also surprisingly complex) nature is slowly revealed and the crew is amped up to a state of constant tension. Definite Caine Mutiny vibes with a touch of nuclear war…I mean, warning.

pickThis is without a doubt my favorite Penguin Classics cover of all time. The interior covers pirates from Francis Drake through Jean Laffite. New to me are the reports of 19th-century ships attacked by pirates. Everything is taken from source documents. Whether you are the least bit curious about pirates or you're a longtime fan, this one is one of the best out there.
