Mehso-so

This was my #poetrychallenge2019 book for August. I gave this a so-so. The poetry wasn‘t bad, just underwhelming. There wasn‘t even one poem that stood out for me. I‘ve never read anything by this poet before. Honestly, I pulled this off the shelf because it had “map” in the title. I‘m a big map- head.

It seems like the perfect night to sit on the deck and start my August #poetrychallenge2019 book! 🌄

from: a visit to my pantheon reveals a hole in the sky

I hope you‘re kissed tonight
for real, not like people at midnight on TV
pretending time is a dog
we‘ve taught to sit. I think I mean
we scream Happy New Year
as if we can tell the future
what to do, trying hard to look
as if we feel the way champagne tastes,
and I don‘t believe for a second
we‘ve got such beautifully lit
chandeliers inside us.

VioletBramble This was a 5⭐️read for me. I initially bought the book because the cover photo is from The Event of a Thread - an interactive art installation which I loved. Luckily, that photo led me to something else I loved- this poetry collection. 5y

A Girl Sings to Death

A girl in an orange dress climbs
the spreading cypress and sings.
She hangs like a spider monkey
and looks at things upside down.
A red-tail perched in the crown calls
to her mate on the bell tower cross.
Death has been saving an earthly
squirrel for the hawk‘s children.
Death has been saving a snake
for them, it has a rat in its belly.
The girl makes a place in her song
for the cries and the wind listens.

From In Search of the Least Abandoned Constellation :

The reader's face is a child's rapt face. The book is her latest soul, disguised as a more or less acceptable concrete object. The child is happy. The afternoon, a novel.

When I decided to read at least one volume of poetry a month for #poetrychallenge2019 I used the Book Outlet boxing day sale to pick up a bunch of random poetry books, based only on the title and cover. This was one I picked for the cover, and when I saw it on Maggie Stiefvater's shelfie the other day I knew I found my February pick.

monalyisha Yes! Never read this but: In Maggie We Trust. 🙏🏻 6y
GondorGirl @monalyisha Exactly! If she suggests something toy know it's going to be good... and probably a little strange. 😁 6y

Can anyone doing the #poetrychallenge2018 answer a couple of questions for me, please?

- Is it just reading one poetry book a month?
- Who is the organizer?
- Is there going to be a 2019 challenge?

The reason I'm asking is that I was planning on doing my own poetry challenge next year, but if I can join in with something other people are doing that would be a lot more fun.

TheSpineView The best person to ask is @lazydays. She is the poetry guru! I bet she can answer your question. 6y
TEArificbooks I think @Natasha.C.Barnes is hosting #poetrychallenge2018 and it was read one book a month. Idk if she has plans for doing one next year. 6y
GondorGirl @mdm139 @TheSpineView Thanks for the info AMA for tagging people who might be able to help. I'm looking forward to expanding my reading next year. 6y

TK-421 Yes, as @mdm139 said @Natasha.C.Barnes is host of #poetrychallenge2018 but she stopped posting several months ago so I don't expect she'll be organizing a 2019 challenge. @TheSpineView mentioned @LazyDays who hosts the #PoetryMatters photo challenges. They're an awesome way to encourage reading poetry while searching for a poem that fits the daily word! If anyone hears of a 2019 poetry reading challenge, I'd love to participate. 6y
LazyDays @TheSpineView @TK-421. Thank you!💗😘😘 I would love yo do a poetry reading challenge. I was thinking of doing something like a photo challenge but with the poet. But this next month all I've done is another daliy word prompt. If you are going to do anything I'd love to join!😊 you can email me also if you'd like. Lazydayslitsy gmail. If you would like any assistance 😊😊💗 6y
TheSpineView @LazyDays I would be up to helping with a poetry reading challenge. I loved doing the photo challenge. My email is lisa@thespineview.com 6y
LazyDays @TheSpineView thank you! If I do end up doing something, I'll let you know😊 6y
VioletBramble I was planning to continue reading one book of poetry a month in 2019. I've read a poetry book monthly for nearly a decade now. Do we really need an organizer? Natasha hasn't posted since March 2018 and many of us continued with the challenge all year. The only rule is to read 1 book a month. Is anyone with an app that makes collages/quotes willing to make a post announcing #poetrychallenge2019 @TheSpineView @LazyDays @TK-421 @GondorGirl 6y
GondorGirl @VioletBramble I'm game to just use the #PoetryChallenge2019 tag and not have an organizer or anything. I mostly just want to build myself accountable and actually do it this year! 6y
TheSpineView @VioletBramble Myself and @LazyDays have been discussing how to proceed with a poetry challenge 6y
