Closed for the Season | Mary Downing Hahn

Ahead of us, one of the girls on the bus was telling her friend that she‘d sat near me on the bus—
the cute boy who was in the newspaper.
I smiled. So far, things at school were off to a pretty good start. I sure hoped they‘d stay that way.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ One more about Israel Keyes. It‘s a weird need to be a pseudo expert sometimes, not this would ever be a normal topic of conversation. I‘ve had enough now. This guy was the worst kind of monster. Thankful he was caught before inflicting even more suffering and death. That he had a daughter blows my mind. Even being a father couldn‘t save his disgusting deviant behavior.

KathyWheeler I have the weird need too — with me, it‘s white supremacy movements, so I have a lot of books about the KKK and other groups. Not a topic that comes up much in conversation. 😄 Before that, it was serial killers; I don‘t know anything about Israel Keyes though. I‘ll have to read this. (edited) 1mo
britt_brooke @KathyWheeler It‘s that desire to become an expert. Definitely think it‘s a personality thing. The need to not feel dumb should the occasion for these very specific conversations arise. 😂 1mo
LeahBergen I do these exact sort of deep dives, too. 😆 1mo

This is an investigative podcast from Audible where the author seeks to find the truth of who killed Jimmy. The murder occurred in the Australian Northern Territory during the hottest season of the year. Jimmy‘s body was discovered in a creek bed, mummified, with his genitals removed. Phillip Mather, Jimmy‘s best friend, was convicted of the crime and served 11 years in prison.

Pour some out for Gentill‘s agents, as it must‘ve been a real struggle not to take the plot of The Mystery Writer personally. It‘s a lot more violent, and a lot more scary, than The Woman In The Library. It‘s also less obviously meta, following the traditional mystery-thriller format more closely, but it‘s every bit as readable. Amazing cover and good set-up, but then the story stalled out and the ending was too far-fetched. The main character is not very curious/nosy/skeptical which means there isn't much to propel the mystery narrative.

This was quite a thrill read. The plot starts off slowly but then it really ramps up in the second part. The story is mostly told from Theo's persepective but we also see moments from Gus and Mac, adding more depth. The ending is really well done and i loved how it all came together. The truth of everything is so clever and twisted. I found myself hooked from almost the start and was desperate to see how it would end. #Netgalley 4*

Meh… 2 1/2 stars for this trope laden over produced and over played who-done-it. I do like the old radio play type of feel though. That was worth it if you could get beyond the ham acting.

Very enjoyable espionage thriller. I figured out the twist about 2/3rds into the book, but a fun read nonetheless. Will definitely be going back to read the first in this series, but first…

This was a first for me by this author. I was intrigued by it and felt she did a pretty good job of making a thriller/mystery. While it did have just a bit about conspiracy theories in the beginning of some chapters it did by no means take away from the story.

I enjoyed this book. It wasn't a favorite but still it was good.
