Mindy McGinnis is the most quotable author I swear. Prepare for some intense quote sharing as I read. 16% in. So far Peekay is by far my fav character. Not so sure about Jack at the moment but he‘s kind of relatable with his massive crush on Alex.

Strong follow up to Not a Drop to Drink. Though I'll refrain from spoilers for the end of book 1, I will say that I was instantly reimmersed into the world of the first novel, one where water is scarce and our protagonist must consider who and when to trust. This novel broadens the setting of the first but maintains the sense of isolation in its main characters. I'm officially a McGinnis fan.

Mindy McGinnis's debut novel is astonishing. Her protagonist Lynn, who has grown up in a world where water is scarce and she knows only her mother, a hard, pragmatic woman who prioritizes her daughter over everyone else. Lynn's coming of age requires her to consider issues of survival vs. compassion, self vs. community, and safety vs. caring/vulnerability. Amazing, bleak young adult novel reminiscent of Cormac McCarthy's The Road in its spareness.

Dear lord, this book.

Not only was it incredibly thought-provoking, witty, and well-written, it was a total takedown of the way our society is built around stereotypes and sexism.
