March: Book Three | Andrew Aydin, John Lewis

This immediately brought to mind a saying my former Pastor used often: "It's a time for prayer meetin' and it's a time for bear meetin'." I had the general idea and thought it referred to when we should use common sense with faith. I didn't realize it had anything to do with race. According to folklore, the tale* is peculiar to African American churches; and the bear symbolizes the white man.

Texreader That is fascinating. Thanks for sharing. 8y
Donna_sBookMinute 👉🏽@Texreader -- I'm glad you found it to be of interest. I've googled it a few times. But this time, I actually found three versions of the tale. You're welcome; and Thanks. 8y
Texreader @Donna_sBookMinute It's so good to keep these memories alive. So much to be learned from them. 8y
Donna_sBookMinute 👉🏽@Texreader -- True from our standpoint and through the eyes of our descendants. 8y

". . . the press had focused much of their attention on the white workers, often identified by name . . . working alongside nameless Blacks."
I agree with the observation and concern about the press. It's more a revelation than a tactic. They tipped their hand with this one. They may have thought they were "lending credibility" to our efforts. But this subliminal diversion from "objective reporting" spoke volumes.

DogMomIrene I was a journalism major, so reading this page made my heart sink. I was encouraged that your view was that this observation about the press reveals more of their mental model than direct strategy. Mental models can change...thankfully! 8y
Donna_sBookMinute 👉🏽@ocdirene -- I'm just seeing this. There are many responsible journalists today. But I do think many . . . MANY of today's reporters are more concerned with fame and recognition than scruples. Sad to say, that was then; this is now. 8y

This FCBD (Free Comic Book Day) Special from comiXology features excerpts from Books One, Two, and Three. I'll probably leave the Book Three excerpts unread. Looking forward to starting it tomorrow. In Book One, John Lewis was excited about meeting Martin Luther King. In Book Two, he's a key member of CRM leadership which, of course, includes Dr. King. #MarchInMarch #MarchTrilogy #JohnLewis #CongressmanJohnLewis

White Supremacy has always hidden behind Christianity, making the most asinine claims, to turn its many wrongs into "rights." Though they make these claims with straight faces, their souls are plagued with terror.

CouronneDhiver Ugh... 😔 Ignorance is so sad... and I hate to see my faith painted with it. 8y
MicheleinPhilly What Bible were these people reading? 😒 8y
Merethebookgal Ugh 😒 8y
Donna_sBookMinute @CouronneDhiver -- Some of them were actually that ignorant. But most of them were counting on the ignorance of those who didn't read the Bible to take their word as gospel. @micheleinPhilly -- probably the KJV, expecting all the "thees" and "thous" to scare the common man (of any race) away from reading it. Now that I think of it, I own a Q'uaran but haven't read it. But radical so-called Muslims use Islam to justify violence as well. 8y

"The police became a dangerous problem too."
Could it be that the establishment that was showing "The Ten Commandments" broke Commandment Nine? They would've had to "bear false witness," by saying the so-called "negroes" were causing a disturbance, to get the police to come out. Double standards is a major problem. But the system that's in power makes, and changes, the rules. #MarchInMarch #MarchTrilogy #JohnLewis #CongressmanJohnLewis

My introduction to graphic novels continues. If anyone's interested, #ComiXology has the March trilogy plus a bonus book for $21.99. I've already discovered it will display individual panels. What else does it do?

Donna_sBookMinute 📚🍷🔄 @Books_Wine_Repeat -- in case you haven't gotten Book 2 yet ... 8y
ladyclassics I just started getting into graphic novels in the last couple of years! I really love them and try to read some every summer :) 8y
Donna_sBookMinute @ladyclassics -- There seems to be something for every reader. 8y

Books_Wine_Repeat @Donna_sBookMinute Thanks! I'll look into it! 👍 8y
Donna_sBookMinute @Books_Wine_Repeat -- I've already come across a snag. If you like to bookmark pages and create notes, you won't be able to with this app. Lesson learned: You get what you pay for. But I'll hang with it for a while. Just wanted to give you a heads-up since I recommended it. 8y
moranadatter What do you think of the format? Are you interested in trying more? 8y
Donna_sBookMinute @kmdartist -- I don't know of another comic app to compare this one to. I like the option to read by panels. There is another series I'd like to read; but before I use this platform, I'm interested in finding other options. I've grown accustomed to the bookmarking and note features in text ebooks. I'll have to see what else is out there for graphic reading. This is totally new to me. Do you have experience with comic or graphic novel apps? 8y
moranadatter @Donna_sBookMinute Oh! I meant graphic novels. I've played around with a few apps. None are great, but ComiXology is pretty good. It would be nice to be able to make notes. That's something I wouldn't do with a paper comic. (edited) 8y
Donna_sBookMinute 👉🏽 @kmdartist -- Oh okay. I like it and plan to read the Black Panther series by Ta-Nehisi Coates. I saw some other possibilities in the app. 8y

Pickpick

THE CONTENT:
"March" was my first graphic novel. While reveling in Lewis' upbringing, his introduction to Dr Martin Luther King, and his exposure to activism, I also experienced a wave of nostalgia. And I reflected on how my mindset has changed over time. Non-violence accomplished what it was designed to do. But it's a new day. Cohesiveness is lacking; and leadership is not revered as it once was. #MarchInMarch #MarchTrilogy #JohnLewis ⬇️

Donna_sBookMinute THE ILLUSTRATIONS:
But most of the illustrations don't adequately capture the likenesses of the people portrayed. I've selected the best images I found of Lewis and King, and an excellent likeness of Ghandi. But the images of Rosa Parks look nothing like her. Is this a common practice for graphic novel illustrators?
(edited) 8y
TheLondonBookworm Great choice for your first graphic novel ☺️ 8y
Lindy @Donna_sBookMinute In biographical nonfiction, cartoonists often work from photographs and other visual source materials. I don't know what Nate Powell had to work with, but it's too bad that Rosa Parks isn't recognizable. 8y
Donna_sBookMinute @lindy -- I figured as much. But there's an abundance of available photos of the characters portrayed. I'm not sure what he used for models either. Thanks for commenting. 8y
Donna_sBookMinute ?? @TheLondonBookworm -- I'd been wanting to read one. There's another series I want to read. Then who knows? There's always "The Archies" ? 8y

Either his understanding as a child, or two little words that were somehow dropped in the passing down of the practice, changed the meaning of this piece of advice for young John Lewis. I found a few online references. The folklore archives of roots web includes, "Never set a hen on an even number OF EGGS, or you will not be successful with the hatching." (emphasis mine). Too cute!

Donna_sBookMinute "The Book of the Farm" was published in 1890 by William Blackwood & Sons, a Scottish publishing house founded in 1804. 8y

Merethebookgal Thanks for finding that! 8y
Donna_sBookMinute 😂 #kmdartist! That's good to know. Now you have one less errand for today. 🙂 @emtobiasz -- I couldn't let it rest. It would have kept pecking (pun intended) at me 🐓 @Merethebookgal -- my pleasure. My genealogical research has taught me to leave no stone unturned. 📕📗📘📙📖📚📓 8y

I'm reading the electronic copy from Hoopla. My box set should arrive before I finish Volume 1. This is my first graphic novel. So far, so good. I thumbed through the print copy of Book 1 at B&N; and I think will be a more comfortable read for me.

Books_Wine_Repeat I loved Volume 1. ❤ I need to get Vol 2 since it's not available on Hoopla and read along with everyone. 8y
Merethebookgal I'm glad you're enjoying it so far! And I like what you did with the graphics, very cool 👍 8y
