The Girl of Ink & Stars | Kiran Millwood Hargrave

This was a beautiful little story of friendship and resilience, and my only regret is that I didn't read it back when I first bought it as a teen.

I loved how the world of the story was so similar and yet so distinctly different from this reality. Isabella was such a brilliant, strong and yet totally relatable character.

I don't want to give too much away, but I recommend this book to, well, anyone who needs a little simple, beautiful adventure.

TCLinrow One last read to go to complete this challenge - which took a lit longer than I originally intended! #TBRChallenge #LeastRated #ABookThats 4y

This really was a fascinating journey through the human brain, what it means to be human, and what it means to be sentient. I loved the way the author considered what we have and what we might be able to achieve, and what that might mean for us. Such a huge amount of information, well considered and clearly set out. It was also great to hear how enthusiastic the author was about the subject in his reading.

These were engaging retellings (reimaginings?) of classic fairytales. The narration was good and I liked the way it was split between 2 narrators so it was easy to follow where one story ended and the next began. I particularly enjoyed the way they were set in the middle ground between Grimm's and Disney; happy endings, per se, but not sad endings either.

A good collection, well read by the narrators.

phantomx The Bloody Chamber is amazing! There are a lot of other retellings that get a lot of credit, and this one is sometimes overlooked at by readers. I really enjoyed reading "The Lady of the House of Love." Each story is dark and leaves a haunting feeling within you. I'm glad you liked it. Check out Malinda Lo's 5y
TCLinrow @phantomx I had never even heard of The Bloody Chamber but figured I'd give it ago when it was on sale, and I have no regrets! I don't know why it isn't more popular. Ash sounds pretty awesome so I'll keep an eye out for it 😊 5y

So I managed to finish off the tagged today, but because I was rushing through it I don't think I really got to enjoy it properly so I'm gonna hold off on a proper review. I didn't manage to finish off the 2nd board like I wanted to, but I'm pretty pleased that I got as far as I did 😁

I loved this book.
Kira was always a physically powerful character, so I was worried there would fail to be any growth for her, and Jason was such a whiner I feared I would never bring myself to like him. Kira learnt to step out of her mother's shadow and become herself, and Jason learnt who he could be and embraced it. The dragons and spaceships were pretty cool too 😉
A cool combo of sci-fi and fantasy YA

Well, the premise was good. It progressed steadily and the environments were well imagined, the different races of aliens were distinguished by more than just appearance and the humans were the heroes (without being TOTAL a**holes). HOWEVER, the author took 'sex sells' way too literally. I'm amazed the main character had time to get anything done, and I'm still not sure what value it even added to the story.

I love a good creep fest, and this one was a good read. The language was a bit of a challenge at times, but not in an unreadable way - just occasionally puzzling about how a certain word was meant (though I was quite tired in the lead up to Christmas which wouldn't have helped). I've always liked the way ACD writes, and this was just another great example of his writing. 👻

I struggled with this one. There is a LOT of description - I get that he was trying to 'set the scene' because he was creating his own world, but surely he could have taken a leaf out of other authors books and realised that he could have left SOMETHING to the imagination. I probably skipped over important elements of the story trying to get through the swamp of descriptions. A good effort, but not my cup of tea.

Well, I'm afraid its gonna be a day of catch up for me because I am so far behind on reviews now its unreal!
I did manage to finish a few books over the last couple of weeks, but haven't had chance to write them up... just have a few scribbled notes... oops 😅
On the plus side, I am now so close to the finish line on my #LeastRated #TBRChallenge - 1 finished and 1 with just 3 to go! Think I might focus on #ebooks next year... I have so many 🤯🤭

ljuliel I must have missed your original post about this. Are you reading books you own that have low ratings , or choosing books that have low ratings ? And are you finding any that you‘ve given higher ratings for ? 5y
TCLinrow I went through my books on Goodreads and looked at which ones had the lowest number of ratings. A lot of them had low ratings as well, but some of them have turned out to be hidden gems. It seems that while they aren't popular they are well written, or have strong storylines, that have just flown under the radar somehow. I've been at it for a few months now, just working my way through with the aim to finish 2 boards by new year 😊 5y

Another pick for the nostalgia value, although this one was a little bit less... troublesome. It didn't seem to be trying to be moralistic the way the Grimm's book did, but that may just be the way it read. Either way, these stories needed an update to keep them relevant in this day and age.
