4.5 ⭐ I just don't think anyone beats Erik Larson in nonfiction telling today. I always find his books fascinating and end up learning things I never did. Isaac's Storm is no different. It is about the deadliest hurricane to ever hit America. It happened 105 years before Katherine, in 1900 in Galveston, Texas. The hurricane killed thousands and demolished the city. Some say had it not been for the hurricane, Galveston may have been as ⬇️

MonicaLoves2Read big as Houston and as important. Larson looks at a meteorologist Isaac Cline and the deadliest hurricane. It seems in those days, men had thought that they had reached the limits of science and that they were immune to nature's power. A very compelling, vivid true story of life and death.

Isaac has an award named after him. So it was interesting taking a dive into who he was and what went down, which suggests the credit to him may be overhyped. As someone who work who works in this field, it‘s a humbling reminder, and it‘s a solid read.

Book for May. It‘s interesting to note that this is the only #authoramonth selection that made it to my #12booksof2023 list. I did like many of the other months‘ choices, though…

Today‘s Prompt: BREAK A LEG

HISTORICAL FICTION

From Vaudeville to nursing school and then back again.

Most of the book was about the dance marathons and prohibition.  I loved learning about the silver showers at the marathons and was a bit shocked how the dancers had to dance with only short breaks and no sleep. 4/5

Unread NetGalley ARC on my Kindle involves #Dancing
Set in Depression-era Galveston, Texas, the author was inspired by the painting shown & the dance marathons/contests that took place there.🕺🏻💃🏻

Eggs Looks inviting 🩷 1y

A collection of snapshots of life for Mexican American and Pilipino Americans in mostly Galveston Texas, this novel moves between characters to weave a community. The way the story built then receded felt rather like a hurricane, inevitable and uncertain at the same time.
It‘s a low pick for me, only because the number of characters made it hard to feel close to any, though elder Magdalena was my favorite.

With one of my first Passion Flowers 🌸

JenniferEgnor Are these your passion flowers? 1y
Soubhiville @JenniferEgnor yes it‘s the first time I‘ve ever grown them. 🙂 1y
Cinfhen Beautiful flowers and lovely review!! I‘m still on the fence about this book…#MaybeSomeday 1y
JenniferEgnor I‘ve always loved them and started to grow my first years ago. When we moved in 2019, I found another, even more beautiful than the one I‘d grown before, with a deep royal purple. It has since spread and new vines pop up everywhere. The first time I ever saw a passion flower, was in a sun flower field—and it was the fruit bearing variety! Happy gardening🌱 1y

I guess this is a pick? The first 2/3 of it definitely was. The last third, I'm not so sure. It was a bit of a mess. I was originally interested because it's set in Galveston and I did enjoy the setting and the world of vaudeville and dance marathons. Without spoiling anything, the story took a turn that was uncomfortable and ended up feeling historically inaccurate. This was my #bookspin for July.
