“One day, you‘ll be scrutinized and scorned, and the next, you‘ll be celebrated and lauded. Sometimes by the very same people. You will not be able to control the narrative, but you can act according to your conscience, particularly in your personal life. And at the end of the day, that should be the only measure that matters.”

A thoroughly researched biography about a fascinating, admirable woman. Frances Perkins is a true inspiration.

I have a few quibbles with some of the writing, but Frances' life was so fascinating that it more than makes up for it.

Karisimo I wonder how this compares to this fictional account of her?! 4w
lil1inblue @Karisimo Good question! I haven't read the book you tagged...yet. My original intention was to pair this with the Sunday Buddy Read because I was craving non-fiction. But I got so wrapped up in her life, that I didn't read the historical fiction. 😂 4w

Happy Presidents‘ Day* to those who celebrate.

Some good ones who must be looking on in horror at what we‘ve become, and some bad ones who must be patting themselves on the back for their part in getting us here.

IMHO part of the job of President is respecting the people who work for you. ALL of them. In this time of “narratives over facts,” starting tomorrow I‘ll share a few narratives about my experience as a #longtimefed employee.

Susanita * The holiday is officially Washington‘s Birthday on the federal level. It‘s a little awkward, however, to wish someone a happy…someone else‘s birthday. By the way, we do NOT need an additional holiday for a certain someone‘s birthday. What is wrong with these people? 8mo

AmyG Not my President‘s Day for me. Hope things work out ok for you as a federal employee. Scary times. (edited) 8mo
Susanita @AmyG Thankfully I‘m retired, but I‘ve been following the shenanigans with alarm. 8mo

#12BooksOf2024 #ChurchillInTheWhiteHouse #RobertSchmuhl #December2024

Winston Churchill visited the White House many times during his two terms as prime minister. He met with FDR and Dwight D. Eisenhower and shaped American foreign policy during the Second World War. He arrived after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He had a great relationship with FDR but not so much with Eisenhower.

EadieB I really did enjoy this book and reading about Churchill. Never knew that he came about fifteen times and stayed in the Rose Room at the White House. He also went a couple of times to Canada and met with the prime minister there. If you like history books then you will love this book. Highly recommended! 10mo
