Mehso-so

This is an autobiographical novel by a woman from #Curaçao whose mother brought her to the US at 13. Certainly a lot of what happens for her is affecting, but the writing is young YA, which really didn‘t work for me, and some of the naivety of the characters stretches credulity. I struggled a bit to get through this and it frankly would‘ve been a bail if I had another option for #DutchAntilles.

I just finished book 1, Deep Shadow, set in the #DutchAntilles so I thought I‘d see what else he‘s written. Here‘s the #readingtheAmericas countries he‘s covered:

Book 2: also Dutch Antilles
Book 3: #Belize
Book 4: #Mexico (Deep Devil)
Book 5: #CaymanIslands
Book 6: #TurksandCaicos (Deep Hex)

He also wrote a Christmas novella set in the #Caymans, Angels of the Deep

If I read them all I might have my first #serieslove for the year

TheSpineView Good luck! 2y
Andrew65 Looking at the countries visited for #ReadingTheAmericas2023 I think I need to read this series too. Enjoy. 2y

Here‘s another photo from the friend who hiked into the volcano on an island that is referenced in the tagged book. #DutchAntilles #readingtheamericas

Librarybelle Amazing photo! 2y
BarbaraBB Bonaire looks lush! I‘ve never been there but I‘ve visited nearby Curacao a lot. That is such a great place too. 2y
Texreader @BarbaraBB This photo was from a different island that was just referenced in passing, Statia or “Sint Eustatius” 2y

The tagged book mentions in passing an oil company based here in San Antonio. So I snapped a photo of the page of the book and sent it to a friend who works at the company. Here‘s his response and one of his photos:

“Awesome, a couple of years ago I went there for work. Hiked inside to the bottom of that volcano! Attaching a few pics for reference... we've sold that facility since.”

Pickpick

Boone is a dive master at a scuba shop in #Bonaire in the #DutchAntilles. While diving, he spies a submarine built by a #Venezuela drug cartel but hijacked by terrorists. Along with dive customers who happen to be well connected with the appropriate branches of government, he finds he is the only one who can stop the sub from blowing up cruise ships anchoring in a Caribbean island port. The author is an actor who turned writer focused on his ⬇️

Texreader favorite childhood vacations, the Caribbean, and his love of scuba diving. On the one hand, the level of detail actually makes this far-fetched plot very realistic. On the other, it makes for a slow start and gets a bit tedious. I enjoyed the book and its descriptions of the islands. I‘d be happy to read the next in the series. #readingtheamericas (edited) 2y

Susanita Unfortunately, I don‘t think the plot sounds that far fetched. 😳 2y
Texreader @Susanita I know; I was worried it might be a bit too true… 2y
