Escaping Exodus: A Novel | Nicky Drayden

There‘s a new bookstore featuring Afro-Futurism in all its forms, written by black and indigenous women. They have bundles of featured titles, ebooks, graphic novels, merchandise, paper books, what looks like a full calendar of interesting events.

Here‘s their website: https://sistahscifi.com/

My tiny book haul today. Didn't have much money but wanted to get to my local indie and help their business stay afloat! Have been wanting to get On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous for a while now. A Burning just jumped out at me from the shelf though so I came home with both #shoplocal #indielove #thevillagebookshop #oceanvuong #meghamajumdar #diversevoices

BookwormDownUnder I enjoyed A Burning! 🙂 4y
CuriousG @BookwormDownUnder I've just read the first 30 pages, but so far I'm really liking it! 4y

Smith crafted a another group of stunning essays in his new book, which publishes in Sept. 2020. They‘re so spot on and relevant to current events as to be fully prescient. When in fact, they‘re discussing complex conditions that have existed for a ridiculously long time. If #diversevoices and social justice matter to you, please pre-order it.

#integrateyourshelf @ChasingOm @Emilymdxn

Litsy has been such a positive influence for my intentional intersectional reading habits! I‘m glad to re-energize these choices since I‘ve been less focused on #diversevoices lately.

58 books in 2020
6 Black
5 Other POC
6 LGBTQIA+ (could be more ... not all authors put that front and center)
0 Indigenous 😰

2 Black authors in my currents reads as well

Emilymdxn Fantastic! We all have more we can do and hopefully being reflective halfway through the year can help. I agree it‘s difficult to assess LGBT authors, it‘s impossible to be exact on any criteria I guess 4y
ChasingOm Thanks for joining us! It‘s definitely hard to find some data especially when there are still stigmas attaches to some identities. 4y
KatieDid927 Yeah, having a real hard time coming up with an accurate LGBTQ number. 4y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Emilymdxn Thanks for offering us the opportunity to reflect together! 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @ChasingOm Thanks for starting this thread. Yeah, personally I think no one has an obligation to share their specific personal details. But I‘m sure I could find more gossipy info if I wanted to dig around. But I don‘t. 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @keithmalek What?? How does this relate and did you mean to post it here? 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @KatieDid927 Not everyone is obligated to share those details. Some are out and proud, some are private. That‘s okay by me. 🌈 4y
keithmalek Never mind. 4y
KatieDid927 @BarbaraTheBibliophage Totally agree! Just not sure how accurate my tally would be. 4y
Reggie @KatieDid927 maybe your problem was the same as mine because some of my black authors overlapped with my LGBTQ numbers. I just separated everything so that way it didn‘t double my books. 4y
KatieDid927 @Reggie Part of it is I just genuinely don‘t know how all authors choose to identify, which is okay! They don‘t all need to let readers know, but it makes it harder to categorize. Also with people like Langston Hughes, who many thought to be queer but we don‘t actually know for sure. Should I count him or not? Another Litten suggested counting representation in the text regardless of author identity, because it‘s still representation. I‘ll ponder. 4y
KatieDid927 @Reggie But yes valid points as authors like Roxane Gay would fall under both categories. 4y

If you can‘t buy, then borrow! Authors benefit from Kobo, Scribd, Kindle Unlimited, and library borrows. I‘m especially focused on black women authors right now.

#blacklivesmatter #blackoutbestsellerlist #blackpublishingpower #diversevoices

Megabooks I‘ve bought several over the past two weeks, but I want to give a preorder to Morgan for sure 4y
rwmg I just bought 4y
rwmg I didn't know you could borrow for this, so I borrowed from Scribd (edited) 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @rwmg Both of your choices are so interesting! 4y

Winner of two important #LGBTQ awards—Stonewall & Lambda—the primary audience for this first-person tale are readers who are around the same age as the main character, who‘s 12. Caroline Murphy was abandoned by her mother for unknown reasons, is bullied at school, and falls in love with another girl. To set her even further apart, Caroline can see spirits. A heartfelt & memorable story set in the US Virgin Islands. #diversevoices #audiobook

Kathrin I just started this for @booked2019 . I am glad you liked it!! 5y
Lindy @Kathrin I could tell the story was close to the author‘s heart. I appreciate that kind of writing. 😊 5y

To escape their abusive father, a girl & her sister—who has some kind of cognitive disability like Down Syndrome—flee to a city, where they team up with a pair of homeless boys. They find work such as garbage-picking & they look out for each other. A few passages are rather preachy, but overall this is a moving tale of children being resourceful. A middle grade #audiobook set in southern India and read by the author. #diversevoices
