This spunky who-dunnit is a serious page turner with a lively and fun heroine.

A poignant tale of love and loss, reconciliation, and appreciating what is truly important in life. This is one of those unique stories that is such a joy to read and would make an excellent choice for book club fans

Mehso-so

Thanks to #crookedlanebooks and #netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this ARC, (publication date 4/7/2020)
Set in the early 1800's, Lady Lily Adler is a widow who just moved back to London to try to begin living again. But when she witnesses a murder in her friends garden while attending a soiree, and the police refuse to investigate ⬇️

Crazeedi she feels she must find the killer. There is a lot of social encumbrances and restrictions in this time period, so they seem so frivolous when reading the story. The plot was very good, but I was distracted with all the manners that had to be observed 5y

It‘s been a minute since I was so taken with a new mystery series, but I thoroughly enjoyed this debut novel! Lily, a young grieving widow returns to London from her in-laws, restless and questioning a future that is not what she had envisioned. A murder that she almost witnesses draws on her sense of justice and her keen intelligence to be solved, and with the aid of several old and new friends, she uncovers a scheme involving government ⬇️⬇️

robinb corruption and multiple villains.

Lily is a wonderfully drawn character, a rarity (as seen by society in 19th-century London) of being exceptionally intrepid, fair-minded and strong-willed. And her supporting cast are also “misfits” in one way or another and very interesting in themselves. ⬇️⬇️

robinb I found this to be a very well-written and engaging story, and I will definitely be along for the ride in Lily‘s further adventures! 4.5/5⭐️

Crazeedi Nice review, I wasn't as taken as you. I think the social restrictions put me off, I got tired of all the fussiness 5y

robinb @Crazeedi Yes, the restrictions are pretty harsh and ridiculous at times for that period 🙄...totally agree! I guess I‘m just used to reading about them as I do read A LOT of books set in this time/location. 5y
Crazeedi @robinb I do too, just seems like this one really overdid the description, imo. The story itself was very good I thought 5y

Mehso-so

The second in the Mayfair 100 mystery series, I would rate this between a so-so and a pick because I did enjoy it a bit more than its predecessor.

PROS: Getting to know the characters a little better and an interesting plot;

CONS: The writing was still a little simplistic, and the plot, while interesting was also a bit too convoluted with LOTS of characters to keep track of.

Might read more in future. 3.5/5⭐️

Up next, since I have the ARC for the second book in this series (A Death in Chelsea), I decided to go back and read the first one to be familiar with the storyline. So far, so good...interesting premise.
