Pickpick

This book of short stories (indeed, most were under 10 pages) was a terrific, albeit heartbreaking read. The author is Bosnian and lived in the former Yugoslavia worker as a journalist and writer during the war. His stories focus on the disruptiveness and impact of the war both directly and indirectly, and the cost to relationships between people and their land. The final story, The Library, affected me deeply. Recommended!

Pickpick

This is a brief fictional biography of Frida Kahlo, told entirely from inside her own mind, focusing mostly on her relationship with Diego Rivera, and her chronic illnesses. Drakulić and I don‘t have the same vision of Frida, but I can tell this story was incredibly well crafted because instead of dismissing it I found myself alternately questioning my own vision, and arguing with the author inside my head. #bookspin

zezeki I read this last year, and loved it. And I'm always so glad to see Littens reading Croatian authors. ☺️ 11mo

The Banquet in Blitva | Miroslav Krleza

760 pages of politicking and scheming in a fictional Baltic state and surrounding countries, translated from Serbo-Croatian. It is not laugh-out-loud funny, but it has its moments, and it is also very engaging. Reading it takes a bit of stamina, but it is definitely worth it.
