I listened to the audiobook and loved it because Pamela read it. I‘ve always been a fan of her, always, so maybe I‘m biased. I also just saw her in The Last Showgirl and that was fantastic. She‘s an incredible woman and I feel so lucky that she shared her memoir with us.

When Stars Align | Melissa de la Cruz

This was a fascinating look into the lives of fictional child stars!

The story follows three child stars as they navigate fame and all that comes with it. The book is broken up into 3 parts, with each part taking place during a different decade (2006-2008, 2018, and 2028), so we got to see the characters age and grow.

The Sitcom Star | Jackie Lau
post image

Today I walked 16.75 km around Versailles, with occasional stops to read bits of THE SITCOM STAR. It‘s cute, and I continue to loooooove how Jackie Lau doesn‘t Americanize her work in the slightest. Y‘all will appreciate that my tolerance for Americanization is currently at an all-time low, which is saying something.

My sandwich was great, too. Honestly, the bread from my cheap grocery store is better, but the filling was SO TASTY.

tpixie Looks delicious! Great you are taking the time to sit and relax and absorb! I just got off the phone talking to my son how I‘d love to go to Paris for a month so I would have time to see the things I still want to see there but also time just to sit and relax and absorb the vibe. He‘s trying to learn Spanish, and trying to figure out a way to be able to spend more time in Latin America learning the language and dancing. 5d
xicanti @tpixie you should TOTALLY do a month here! There‘s so much to absorb even when you‘re not actively doing stuff. I see people reading (and smoking, and chatting with their friends) every time I pass through the Tuileries—though, to be honest, I still haven‘t had a really long public sit-and-read myself. I‘ve kinda destroyed my feet over the last three days, though, so it‘s probably coming. 5d
tpixie @xicanti those uneven sidewalks and streets are very hard to walk on!!! 5d
xicanti @tpixie I have flexible-soled shoes that were specially designed for long walks, but clearly the designers didn‘t factor European cobbles and rocky paths into things. Sigh. 5d

Mehso-so

I was a big fan of Full House growing up although not a big fan of the character Stephanie Tanner, I still wanted to see what led to her downfall after coming from one of the most wholesome shows on TV. It was a fast read, nothing truly eye opening. Just another childhood star falling into a downward spiral. A few interesting tidbits on Full House were revealed but other than that it was kind of a lackluster story.

Bailedbailed

I tried a few times and made it about 30% into the book before I bailed. The concept was intriguing and I wanted to like it, but I just found my mind wandering every time I turned it on.

AmyG Yeah, same. 2mo
Kaylamburson I was so intrigued by the concept and was so bummed it didn‘t click. @AmyG 2mo

This is a fantastic example of a familiar story elevated by great writing and art. We‘ve all been exposed to ‘middling celebrity abducted by fan/stalker‘ stories, and they are usually pretty mediocre. This one is a banger! Well-thought-out observations of the relationship between fame and fandom, coupled with an adaptive art style that changes according to mood and suspense level. Worth checking out!
