The Catcher in the Rye | J. D. Salinger

Mehso-so

That was bizarre. An abrupt ending, and although he annoyed me at times I couldn't help but like Holden. And if he watched his mouth I could have seen him be a great carer or facilitator for young people. Glad to tick this off my list. A 3.5 star for me. Sorry I was so far behind @Cathythoughts @Cortg #catcherinthereadalong

Cortg @Cathythoughts @miralunasbooknook Glad you finished! It took me longer to read than I thought it would. I would love to know how Holden turns out as an adult. (edited) 7y
laurieluna @Cortg same. I did start to feel worried for him at the end, especially when he started feeling unwell. He's just a creative kid with an imagination no one is willing to entertain. Sadly that still happens a lot today. 😔 7y
Cathythoughts @Cortg It‘s great to finish ! Well done. I loved it ! 5 Stars from me. I really liked Holden & felt he was very lost & grieving for his brother. I loved the image of the catcher in the rye.... the power of feeling in this book. The loss Holden suffered of his brother & his innocence.. a deeply moving book for me. 👍🏻congratulations on getting to the finish line 👏🏻💕💕 @miralunasbooknook (edited) 7y

laurieluna @Cathythoughts thanks! I just felt like there was something missing, not sure what! I do think Salinger managed to capture a character out of his time, that no one quite understood Holden. I think the fact that it was just one big stream of Holden's thoughts that knocked me. A teenage boys brain is a scary place, a bit of a break now and then would have been nice 😂 @Cortg 7y
Cortg My son is “suppose” to be reading this book for English class. He‘s 16 and is suffering severe depression and anxiety. We were on our way home from a psychiatrist appointment and he started comparing himself and this day and age to Holden and having depression in the 50‘s. He‘s also taking an AP Psychology class so it was interesting to compare this problem then and now with him. I‘m glad I finally read the book! @Cathythoughts 7y
laurieluna @Cortg I think that's something some people don't understand about the book. It's the story of a young man who has lost a brother, can't find his place in the world and is clearly struggling mentally with all life is throwing at him, not just a stroppy teen. The fact the book is still relevant today says something about how we still struggle to support young men with mental health issues. It's great your son sees someone. I wish him all the best. 7y
Cathythoughts @Cortg I hope your son feels better soon. It‘s great he is getting help & also the AP Pshchology class. It‘s interesting that he compares himself to Holden, & Holden is getting help at the end of the book. Its hard for us as parents too , to witness our children when they are having difficulties, and sometimes not knowing what to do or say. . Thinking of you & your son ❤️ (edited) 7y

Both boys are asleep. I'm so behind on my reading having been in agony with joint pain, headaches and loss of appetite the past couple of days. Not sure what happened but on the mend. 🙌
Time to make some happy hormones by completing at least 2 of these before the month is out. I shall post questions for the #cobabbuddyread tomorrow everyone, I PROMISE.

Sophoclessweetheart How are you finding The Light Fantastic and The Electrical Venus? 😍😊 7y
laurieluna @Wanderingwithwords The Light Fantastic is funny as always, and The Electrical Venus has been as easy, entertaining read. I really like the layout but I would have liked more back story for the characters maybe? X 7y
Sophoclessweetheart It‘s a great one, isn‘t it? 😹 It made me fall in love with Rincewind. Lol. Yes! I‘d have liked to know more about the characters but I couldn‘t help but adore the book! It‘s hit my favourites list! I still think bout it x 7y

laurieluna @Wanderingwithwords they're such interesting characters. Would have been great to find out more about how they all came together, and maybe some longer 'flashbacks' to Hildy. She sounds interesting. Xx 7y

Finished this morning! It took a lot longer to read than I thought it would. That tiny text is deceitful! This book was well timed for me. I see a lot of Caulden in my 16 yo son 😕
@Cathythoughts @miralunasbooknook #catcherinthereadalong

laurieluna I definitely think a younger me would have enjoyed this more. May re-read when my boys are teenagers! 7y
Cathythoughts It was a pick for me too. I thought Holden‘s character very real & human. He was getting the help he needed in the end ... I feel hopeful for him. He is a good guy , who lost his brother, and I think he will be ok. ❤️ 7y
Cortg Did you finish? I haven‘t had much Litsy time lately 😔 @Cathythoughts @miralunasbooknook (edited) 7y
Samplergal Still a favorite from my high school years. 7y

Eye drops have finally worn off. Sun hasn't helped. But. Boys are engrossed in Despicable Me 2 so time to do some reading. We saved the day with a day in the sun with the TV off, and a BBQ for tea! #catcherinthereadalong

TrishB Glad the day turned round ❤️ 7y

I really loved this one. I couldn‘t put it down. My heart went out to Holden ... and I loved the simplicity of what the title meant. The catcher in the rye ... ❤️ #CatcherInTheReadalong @miralunasbooknook

laurieluna Currently reading it now in bed. Halfway through, hoping to have it finished by tomorrow evening. Holden is a very strange, conflicted character. I think there's a bit of Holden in every 17 year old. 7y
Cathythoughts @miralunasbooknook I agree. I think there a bit of Holden in all of us 7y
andrew61 I read it as a teenager and even though i was hardly a rebellious youth remember it vividly for expressing some of the thoughts going through my head. 20 or so years later it didn't have the same impact but i enjoyed it nevertheless - maybe I'd do the unheard of, try a third read. 7y
See All 12 Comments
Cathythoughts @andrew61 yes! The third read. It is a short enough book. I‘ll be thinking about it for awhile... he is grieving his brother, and so lost. And such a nice guy ! I loved the language... boy , it really knocked me out ! It was all right... And I was touched by the simplicity of what made him happy ( with his sister..) He got to me , this character. 7y
ephemeralwaltz Gorgeous photo!! I also enjoyed this when I read it, but not my favorite Salinger. It's a very singular story. I made my mom pick it up recently! She is currently halfway through. 7y
Cathythoughts @ephemeralwaltz thanks! I really loved it. 7y
Tamra My son is named after Holden - long story. 💜 7y
CarolynM I read it I my early 20's and thought I was too old - that I probably would have loved it as a teenager. Maybe now I'm old enough to be sympathetic again. I should try. 7y
RohitSawant Glad to hear you loved this! 💜 7y
batsy I read it the first time when I was still young enough and could relate to Holden a fair bit. He is a memorable character. 7y
Cathythoughts @batsy @CarolynM @Tamra @rohit-sawant I woke up thinking about it .... the links between the song/poem about the “if a body catch somebody coming through the rye.. byRobert Burns.. and his brothers “ catchers “ glove with poems written all over it & the carefree child on the sidewalk on Sunday morning with his parents humming the rye song ...all the links came together for me this morning.. this story is so beautifully put together (edited) 7y
Cathythoughts @Tamra sounds like an interesting story ❤️ (edited) 7y

Cathythoughts @jhod its very good. And. Very easy read 👍🏻 7y
laurieluna @Cathythoughts there's been a couple of comments made about girls that don't sit right with me but then again I'm not the target audience and it was written in the 40s so I'm trying to let them slide for the sake of the rest of the book. 7y
laurieluna @jhod 🙌 I am enjoying it 😊 7y
laurieluna @Oblomov26 oh my goodness! My dad is that kind of guy. Sadly I took after my mum, manners and all! 😂 I never went out for work drinks because I had zero in common with the people I worked with. 7y
Oblomov26 @miralunasbooknook sorry I deleted comment because I realised that it was the tired angry me talking after a long day. I am fortunate in that I can deal with those I work with if not sympathise with them in some cases 7y
laurieluna @Oblomov26 we all have those days! I could always do small talk but most of them watched the Kardashians(sp?) and listened to One Direction. Not that there's anything wrong with that...but it wasn't for me. Also I working in a call centre a lot of people had very brash personalities. (I look after my kids now so no more of that.) 7y
Oblomov26 @miralunasbooknook hmmmm yeah I missed the entire reality television phenomenon and my music tastes is in the Tom Waits space. 7y

1. Yes! #ookbookclub #cobabbuddyread and #catcherinthereadalong
2. I want to change my surname to my partners. It's such an unusual one so we gave it to the boys and now I'm the odd one out. He'd be Richard Nixon if he took mine 😂 My maiden name was given to me by a man, my dad so I'm not fussed about keeping it.
3. Loving Black Stone Cherry's new one but only heard it on the radio so can't remember the name!

“.... then all of a sudden , this tear plopped down on the checkerboard. On one of the red squares- boy, I can still see it. She just rubbed it into the board with her finger. I don‘t know why, but it bothered hell out of me......I went over.. then she REALLY started to cry “❤️. It‘s all in the details with this book 🙏🏻. #Aprella #KeptMeCrying #catcherinthereadalong

#CatcherInTheReadAlong I‘m a quarter in now. And Holden has my full attention , I don‘t know where this is going.... his brother , the story about the baseball glove .... I‘m wondering if my heart is going to be broken. This is very good ❤️

Jess7 This is one of @britt_brooke ‘s all time favorite books. 7y
laurieluna Oh yes, just finished that chapter. Beautiful bit about his brother 💔 7y

britt_brooke So happy that you‘re liking it! It‘s so polarizing, you never know how each reader will feel. I think some folks don‘t understand Holden and can‘t get passed that. I love him. 7y

I was struggling with Holden's voice a bit at first, but now I'm a few chapters in I can see a parallel in his behaviour patterns with a few people I know. To write a character like this in the 1940's as well, made Salinger ahead of their time. Definitely enjoying!

Cathythoughts I‘m only a chapter in , but so far I‘m really enjoying this 👍🏻💕 7y
Cortg I read some last night. I woke up at 5am this morning and decided to get some reading done. I‘m about 70 pages in and really enjoying it! (edited) 7y
laurieluna @Cortg I'm on Chapter 6. Reading usually slows on tuesday and wednesday for me as I have toddler groups and various other things to do with the boys. Hopefully get some more read tonight! 7y
