I just went down such a rabbit hole after learning that Seanan McGuire 1) found her agent through writing Buffy fanfic, & 2) genuinely despises the ending of the series.

NOW. I have plenty of complaints about Buffy. But the ending was never one of them. Any other superfans want to weigh in?

I may have bought a book just to read her essay about it.

Note: Don‘t worry! I bought it used. Because, ew, Joss Whedon.

willaful I was a big fan at one time and was pretty happy with the ending. I'm curious now too. 3d
monalyisha @willaful The most I can find is a Goodreads quote, “The mythology warped and twisted back along itself until Buffy Summers, the girl who once railed against the unfairness of being Chosen, looked at a squadron of girls who were just like she‘d been and took away their right to Choose.” 3d
willaful Ah, yes I can understand that point of view. It's presented as entirely a positive in the show, and you can argue that Buffy's pov has changed with age and that she's giving them something she mostly didn't have -- each other. 3d

AnneCecilie I liked that ending, but I had a completely different understanding off it. I took it to mean that every girl had the inner strength to be a slayer and stand up for herself 3d
TheLudicReader I didn‘t hate the ending of Buffy. (My complaint has always been how they jumped the shark with Spike.) Curious to know what the author‘s fanfic handle was as I wrote a lot of fanfic back in the day and was pretty well connected to fandom. 3d
monalyisha @willaful @AnneCecilie Yes! I viewed it as such a hopeful and beautiful example of the redistribution of power (and its decentralization)! Context is incredibly important. Community vs. isolation means so much. I didn‘t get the impression that every new Slayer would be forced into servitude, either. I bet McGuire feels even more passionately about her interpretation (which she‘s entitled to!) after the allegations against Joss came to light. 3d
monalyisha @TheLudicReader Unfortunately, she removed her name from all of it after people started critiquing it like they would her published writing. I‘m not sure that info‘s findable anymore. I wouldn‘t recognize your handle (I was too young and my memory‘s too shoddy)…but I wonder if I read any of your stuff back in the day! I know McGuire specifically wrote Buffy/Faith fanfic. 3d
TheLudicReader @monalyisha I don‘t think fic writers should be ashamed of what they wrote. It‘s great practice and I wrote stuff I am still really proud of. It sucks that Whedon tainted Buffy‘s legacy, but this is one instance where I separate art from artist. There were a lot of other people involved in the Buffyverse, too. Where did you read your fanfic when you read it? 2d
monalyisha @TheLudicReader I truly have no idea. I was about 13. To me, it was all just “the internet.” 😅 I know I was a big fan of the Angel/Willow “ours is a forbidden love” storyline. To be clear, this pairing horrifies me now. 🙈 (As do many aspects of the show if I look at them too closely.) At the time, my thinking went no further than, “Angel is hot...and I am like Willow.” Reason enough for me! (edited) 2d
TheLudicReader @monalyisha Angel is hot is the reason I started watching that show in the first place. 🤣 The next ten years I was full on fandom! 2d
monalyisha @TheLudicReader Recapping the moment that he returned from Hell (in the nude), my bff‘s older sister‘s bff commented, “He was glistenin‘ like a Greek God!” That moment is forever seared into my brain. 😂 (edited) 2d

It's a xmas miracle! Ever since Disney Hyperion released a trilogy of Buffyverse books, set 20ish years after the show with Willow's daughter as the new slayer, I have been saying they were planning a TV sequel. That Spike was spelled to look "old" and Buffy was missing were huge tip offs to me. Now I see this, and I KNOW I'm right. Looks like Disney and SMG had some negotiating to do lol Who's ready?! I sure am! ?

LazyLibrary Oh man idk how I feel about this one!!!! 1mo

ShyBookOwl @LazyLibrary Have u read the books? They did a really good job with them. And I appreciated how the OG scoobies were interwoven into the story so that it wasn't JUST a new cast 1mo
TheLudicReader I do now, @dabbe. Not sure how I feel...but I definitely like the idea the SMG is attached. However, there is still the problem of Joss Whedon. 1mo
LazyLibrary @ShyBookOwl I have not, but officially added to my list! 1mo
ShyBookOwl @TheLudicReader I highly doubt he'd be attached. He has no connection to the books Disney released, so if my theory is right that the reboot will happen through Disney (and these books), I don't see them involving him. In buying Fox, Disney owns the Buffy rights. They don't need him 1mo

I read so many Buffy books that I burned myself out on them. It's now been many years since I read one, and I'd forgotten how much I actually enjoy them. This one did drag a bit, and at 335 pages was a little too long to sustain the slow pace of the plot. But overall I liked it.

I LOVED THIS STORY!! Imaginative! Action! Fun! Well thought out and the actual actors!!! It was memories on top of memories!! Multiverse … coming from a universe where there are a plethora of slayers to a world where there is one. LOVED IT!! More please! It makes me want to crack open my full series dvd box …

4 ⭐ Welcome back to the Buffy verse. Long time viewers know that there is only one born in every generation. And that the only way to get a new slayer for the previous slayer to die. That is until Willow and Buffy get together and make sure every possible slayer is given their powers so they can defeat evil. But that was 16 years ago. Something has happened to the slayers. At least four are dead, and no one knows where the others are at.

LibrarianRyan We‘re back in Sunnydale with Willow who has a daughter named Frankie. And her daughter has been called up to be the next slayer. Frankie has always known she‘s a witch and has always wanted to be a slayer, but when the actual time comes, yikes! However, she won‘t be alone. Vi‘s sister comes into the picture and Oz‘s nephew who was a born werewolf (not a “made” one) are Frankie‘s best friends. They will create a new Scooby game and start getting 7mo
LibrarianRyan down to the bottom of what is happening in Sunnydale. Is the Hellmuth really reopening? This book was fun. It does not end on a cliffhanger, but you don‘t get the end of the story so have book two on hand. If you are a Buffy person, you‘re going to like this book. If you‘ve never watched Buffy in your lifetime, but you like the idea of vampires check this out. My nephew got hooked on the audiobook in the car with us, and he only listened to an h 7mo

julesG Off to get the audiobook. Thanks Ryan! 7mo
LibrarianRyan @julesG just don't make the mistake I did. I kept mixing up book 1 and two because my audiobook player was not leving the books in the “reading“ section. I ended up switching between books 1 and 2 so many times. It is not even funny. 7mo
julesG I think I'll buy them one by one to avoid confusion. 7mo
