The somber cover does not match this somewhat madcap and irreverent mystery. It is entertaining, but rather convoluted in the end, with lots of characters, all keeping secrets and scheming.

Fun stroll through old England during the war, as a nosy Parker, who harrasses the people of her village about their sinful ways, is found dead, face down in a cess pool. Littlejohn meets eccentric character after eccentric character in search of the killer.

I have a few of these British Library Crime Classics in my Kindle library that I purchase when they are on sale. This one was such fun that I think I need to get a hard copy of it! It‘s funny throughout, and I‘m still not quite sure exactly what happened, but I will definitely be reading it again next year. I wish this author had an opportunity to write more - I‘d have read them all!
I‘m so glad this was my #bookspin book this month!

Bklover Oh, and the introduction was short and very interesting! (I almost never read the introduction) 1mo
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! I've only read a few of these British Library Crime Classics, but they've all been fun. And I LOVE the vintage covers! 4w

Classic detective short stories where science and forensics play a crucial role.

The problem is the science and forensics are so antiquated that it's really hard to stay in some of these stories. This is coupled with a lot of very stiff and pompous style stories. Overall very few are enjoyable so I'd give this particular anthology by the British Library Crime Classics a pass.

An enjoyable country house ‘golden age‘ mystery. Lots of characters and secrets. I didn‘t know what was going on until the end. It kept me on my toes and turning the pages. I read this with my local book group and the theme was a ‘classic‘. I think it fitted the bill as a British Crime Classic.

A competent novel from the Golden Age of Detective Fiction. It‘s set in a flying club in the 1930s, and as a pilot myself, it‘s interesting to see how much has changed over in the world of flying, and at the same time how little has changed.
