Fun stroll through old England during the war, as a nosy Parker, who harrasses the people of her village about their sinful ways, is found dead, face down in a cess pool. Littlejohn meets eccentric character after eccentric character in search of the killer.

Published 81 years ago with no swearing and a more sedentary lifestyle, I found this a really pleasant and satisfying police Procedural. With Insp. Littlejohn's plan detailed before the investigation into a murder begins, it gives you an insight to the detective's thinking. With today's technology there was a clue that is plainly obvious but it would not have been so evident at the time of writing. Great characters, memorable names, a good story.

This 1940s mystery was grimmer than I expected & revealed the dark underbelly of the stereotypically languid, traditional English village. Unfortunately, it's a book that came off mean-spirited. The attempts at wit left me cold; the characterisation somewhat rudimentary & elitist. Two things in particular annoyed me:
1) Inspector Littlejohn is as dull as dishwater
2) The insistence on representing working class speech via patronising dialect text

batsy I found the mystery interesting enough & felt that there was enough there in the themes of rot, corruption, & how unfulfilled lives can curdle & fester in a place where you're pretty much seeing the same people all the time everyday. But the stuff that annoyed me was hard to overlook. Read this for #cloakanddaggerchristmas for the Gamache prompt (bilingual detective or set in a village) 3y
Cathythoughts Great review! I don‘t like the sound of this one. I though the title was cute till I read your review… now I don‘t like the title… sounds like a strange book 3y
batsy @Cathythoughts Thank you! And yes, in my view it's a somewhat mean-spirited book 😕 3y
Cathythoughts Also I sent you a book via Book Depository for Christmas, only they asked for your phone number for delivery purposes.. so I just put my number down ( as the order wouldn‘t go through otherwise 🤷🏼‍♀️) so I hope there arnt any issues about delivery 🤞🏻 the initials of your book happen to be SP .. but it‘s NOT Small Pleasures , it‘s another SP x 3y
batsy @Cathythoughts Whattt... That's so kind of you! Thank you so much ❤️ I will look out for it & let you know! I think there's just the usual postal delays but it'll get here just fine 😘 3y

I am really not getting on Litsy enough. Too much STUFF. I am managing to read, though. So far, this one is fun. Very typical in many ways, but there's something about the writing that keeps it rolling along.

A good, solid mystery with enjoyable characters. There was nothing too flashy or convoluted about the plot, and the strength of this book is in the characters. A classic, small town mystery. I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley.

The mystery was okay, but I found the rendering of dialect in print excruciating.

Some great chapter names! I especially like II and XIII.

Leniverse IV, VI and IX are my favourites, I think. Oh, and XI. I might add this book to my TBR based on the chapter titles alone! (edited) 8y
BookBrat I think IV and V are my favorites. Eavesdropping during dinner could lead to some great tidbits. 8y
rabbitprincess @Leniverse The Vessel of Wrath does sound impressive! This is a British Library Crime Classic, which I request from the library whenever they are ordered. 😄 @BookBrat Yes! And it would be easy to hide your eavesdropping; just pretend you're listening to someone else 😏 8y
Leniverse I checked and the libraries in my part of Britain don't have any of them. 😒 8y
rabbitprincess @Leniverse Aw man! ☹️ 8y
