This wasn‘t an easy book to read - it‘s written in Igbo traditional style so the story is told from the POV of the MC‘s chi (or soul).

It‘s also quite a depressing read, about a man who is rejected by his girlfriend‘s family, due to his social status, and all of the terrible things that befall him as a result.

I wouldn‘t say I enjoyed it, but I am glad that I read it....

10 Minutes 38 Seconds in this Strange World | Elif Shafak

so-so

Everything was good, gripping starting point, interesting story about Leila, about dynamic in her (later estranged) family, about her new family - 5 outcast friends, about she-city Istanbul with some glimpses into Turkish history ... till the last part of the story. I was so disappointed with the turn from solid drama to the some kind action/comic scenes. In the name of five friends I was feeling offended by the end. 🤷‍♀️ #BookerPrize2019

Simona #ayupaugust Narrator in this story is a dead woman by the name #Tequila Leila who remembers her life while she is ‘waiting‘ for her brains to stop functioning. @Cinfhen @squirrelbrain 6y

Simona @Cathythoughts I was quite intrigued by the premise of this book, but I was also a little bit hesitant about it, because I tried two books by Shafak before and I absolutely didn‘t like the prose. For me, her language was too sentimental and melodramatic, but not in this book. (edited) 6y

I get why people like it. I even get why it is nominated for The Booker Prize, and I wouldn‘t be surprised if it won. Its themes are great, current and important. It had so many moments of beauty.

But, in spite of all that, I was BORED! I had to stop listening ti this driving home from work, otherwise I was at risk for falling asleep behind the wheel on the highway. 😴

TrishB I‘ll say this really quietly, I often find booker prize nominations boring, don‘t let anyone else know though. 6y

BarbaraBB I can understand why it bored you. I found the children‘s elegies and the stories about Apaches boring too sometimes. But while reading I could skim them, listening you couldn‘t of course! @Cinfhen @JennyM @Cathythoughts @erzascarletbookgasm keep that in mind, if you decide to read it. Katja is definitely right! 8little_paws Yeah this book tried to do too much imo. And the book within a book drove me crazy here. Dare I say by the end it just felt pretentious. 6y

JamieArc I often find them boring too! But for some reason, I can‘t stay away. I‘m in the middle of this one, and it feels like the author just finished grad school and is trying to incorporate all her newly-found ideas. (Pretentious). 6y

youneverarrived I think maybe audio wasn‘t the best way to go for this one as I felt the same, more so the latter half. The more I think about it though the more I appreciate it. I like it more looking back at it if that makes sense. 6y

I liked the boy‘s narration, but the mom‘s was too boring for my drive 👎 @8little_paws @JamieArc definitely pretentious! @Cinfhen there‘s always room in the #unpopularopinion club 😄 6y
