Another late post for yesterday‘s prompt - I definitely think that Twain‘s non-fiction gets forgotten when compared to the acclaim for his novels, but there is so much enjoyment to be had in books like Roughing It. This autobiographical account follows Twain as he sets out for the west in the 1860s, and dabbles in being a secretary, miner, and eventually reporter. Full of his characteristic wit and satire.
pickA book that I think deserves more readers is any book by AJ Jacobs. While this one is my favorite , I love all of his books. Regardless if you are a religious/spiritual person or not , I feel this book is a great one to read. #riotgrams #bookdeservingmorereaders

A lovely story, set in the 1800s, about a girl with a harelip. Her fate and that of her family is riveting. Beautiful writing and believable characters.

Maylis de Kerangal‘s novel, translated into English by Sam Taylor, received critical acclaim in France and is the riveting story of a heart transplant. It illuminates the inner lives of the patients, parents, doctors, and nurses that are affected over the 24 hours it takes the heart to travel from donor to recipient. Highly recommend.

This was my best read of 2014, I loved it but it didn't even get on any prize short lists. It is a story told by the wife of a prominent politician who struggles to preserve an ordinary private life for herself & their child & what happens when the spotlight falls directly on them. It is not about politics, but the political characters feel more real to me than many in books where politics is the focus. 👇
