***** a beautifully written novel first published in 1924 republished by virago in 1978 and republished once more in 2021 its the tragedy of Gideon Sarn told through the shrewd and compassionate eyes of Prue Sarn his sister. Gideon is handsome strong and hard working but he destroys everything he loves because of his fixation on material possessions. Prue is seen as cursed because of her harelip but she is blessed with intelligence and love.
He was a ever a strong man, which is almost the same, times, as to say a man with little time for kindness. For if you stop to be kind you must swerve from your path.
I fell to thinking how all this blessedness of the attic came through me being curst. For if I hadna had a hare-lip to frighten me away into my own lonesome soul, this would never have come to me. The apples would have crowded all in vain to see a marvel, for I should never have known the glory that came from the other side of silence.
I would never have known or chosen this book if it weren‘t for a group choice at my library but it was so good! If you enjoy the classics, try this one! #beautifulwords #bucolic Born in the wild country of Shropshire, Prue loves two things: the remote countryside and, hopelessly, Kester Woodseaves, the weaver. The tale of how Woodseaves gradually discerns Prue's true beauty is set against the tragic drama of Prue's brother, Gideon.

A lovely story, set in the 1800s, about a girl with a harelip. Her fate and that of her family is riveting. Beautiful writing and believable characters.
First line: “It was at a love-spinning that I saw Kester first.”
