#Booked2020 #AboutGenocide

And that completes the Spring prompts and the challenge. Wrap-up post to follow.

Cinfhen It sounds like a beautiful book although im sure it‘s heartbreaking. 😢 4y
CarolynM @Cinfhen I can't find words that do justice to the subject. The book is excellent. 4y

I‘m not too sure what to say about this one. A semi-autobiographical look at a young boy‘s joyful childhood growing up in Burundi, and its rapid descent into horror as war and genocide tear his world apart.

I loved the depictions of his childhood friendships and some of the writing is quite beautiful, never laboured, and evocative. And then devastating. And it leaves you with so many questions.

rockpools This is from my backlog when I first joined #Netgalley, with thanks to Hogarth for the ARC and apologies for the horribly late review.

And another for #Booked2020 #AboutGenocide #CrushtheRush and my first for this month‘s #BookSpinBingo @TheAromaofBooks @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @Cinfhen @4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraTheBibliophage

What a painful, illuminating, honest and heartbreaking book! Told from the perspective of a young girl, this examination of Cambodia during Pol Pot‘s murderous reign doesn‘t look away from the atrocities conducted by the Khmer Rouge. The perseverance of the author and her family are inspiring and remind the reader of the strength of the human spirit. Difficult to read but so worth it! #ReadingWomen2020 #Booked2020 #AboutGenocide #challenge

With so many well written books on the subject of WW2, there is just no reason to pick this one up. It‘s drier than 2020 is long... and I need a book that can keep my attention now more than ever!

5⭐It's an intricate retelling of the Arthurian legend - with medieval setting, mythological creatures and the Britons against the Saxons conflict, though Arthur himself is long gone. It's also an insightful story about memory, asking important questions whether it's better to remember old sorrows and grudges, letting the vicious circle of hatred and grief spin further, or resort to oblivion and forget what you once have been...Beautiful writing 💜

Cinfhen Sounds great!! 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I had no idea Ishiguro did an Arthurian retelling. Fascinating! 💙👊🏻📚 4y

A heartbreaking retelling of events by the author who, as a small child, survived the Cambodian Genocide under the dictator Pol Pot and the brutal Khmer Rouge regime. I found myself stopping the book often to do my own research on the side, because admittedly I didn‘t know much about this topic before. I can‘t believe this was only about 40 years ago when roughly 2 million people were tortured and murdered in Cambodia. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

samantharoberts Reading the words of someone who actually went through this at only 5 years old was almost too hard to bear. It‘s hard to imagine someone actually going through so much trauma and hardship, especially at such a young age. This was my #Booked2020 pick for the “Set in Southern Asia” prompt 4y
Suet624 I‘ve been too timid to read this. The world feels like a very harsh place. 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Whew. It does sound intense. I put off our #aboutgenocide prompt for a long time because of the same feelings. But my historical fiction choice was actually a lot less emotional than I expected. (edited) 4y

I put this tough topic / prompt off for a while, but appreciated learning about the Armenian genocide from this solid historical fiction choice. It's set in current day and early 20th century. I like Bohjalian generally, but this time it was hard to connect to his characters. I have a few theories about why, but still liked this novel.

Lcsmcat I loved this one. It may be my favorite Bojhalian. 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Lcsmcat I‘m a fan of his but I thought this would be more emotional for me than it was. Still, it‘s a pick! 4y
