The Better Son | Katherine Johnson
post image

On the car stereo today, The Better Son by Katherine Johnson. Half way through and I feel so much for Kip. And the description of the father‘s PTSD behaviour is so spot on I‘ve caught my breath many times with the recognition. My father was not brutal as Harold but I recognise his pain and his actions. #libraries #books #reading #aww2019 #bookstagram #audiobooks

Bailedbailed

I have attempted three times to read this novel set in Sydney at a time of huge change - the erection of the Sydney Opera House and Australia‘s early involvement In the Vietnam War. I havedecided to abandon it. I just cannot engage with the slow and circuitousnarrative. There is no real feeling of anticipation or fear or change. The most prominent emotion is confusion, followed by ennui. I need to move on. #aussieapril #aww2019

Joanne1 I always thought it had the most uninteresting cover when I shelved it at work. Never inspired me to take it home now I‘m glad I didn‘t. I would recommend The Bridge which is (sort of) about the building of the west gate bridge in Melbourne. 6y
AntoinetteBuchanan The Bridge is on my list, thanks for the tip. I didn‘t get to it in my Stella blitz this year but it will come through the library eventually 6y

Pickpick

Another classy, pacy police procedural from Dervla McTiernan. Not quite as twisty as her first novel, but still a great example of the genre and we are all just a little bit in love with DS Cormack Reilly #aussieapril #AWW2019

We are back in the inner west and I couldn‘t be happier. #aussieapril #aww2019

CarolynM This one's waiting for me. Are you enjoying it? 6y
AntoinetteBuchanan Yes well enough. A return to Sydney‘s inner West which was my home for many years, so there‘s that. But it is multi-layered and the first chapter is beautiful, almost lyrical. Solid 3.5 stars from me - just haven‘t had time to formulate a reasoned review. I read it through a bought of insomnia last night. (edited) 6y

Eight Lives | Susan Hurley

My companion running errands today is this new thriller from Australian author Susan Hurley. I haven‘t heard anything about it but it popped up in the newly acquired section of the library‘s RB Digital account so I thought I would give it a go. And it counts for #aussieapril and #aww2019. It has me in its thrall so far, 5 long chapters in

5am is as good a time as any to start this highly recommended read. Will try to get as much read as possible before returning to work tomorrow. #aww2019
