3.5/5⭐ Oppel created a complex animal world with its own interesting mythology and factions. The adventure and danger felt real and had high stakes. It was an entertaining read, but not enough that I want to finish the series (especially after skimming summaries of the remaining books; the story seems to go in a very strange direction). #roll100

The author obviously did a lot of research into bats, and expertly incorporated a great deal of realism into a great story with a unique mythology. Surprisingly good.

As a huge fan of bats, I'm surprised I never heard of this book before. So far a very enjoyable, roughly middle school age, tale of an outcast bat migrating South. Biological accurate action from all animals.

I think this book would be good to read in my classroom around October during Halloween time to get students involved and excited.

In the tradition of other children‘s animal books, like Watership Down, Silverwing is often amusing and bizarre and brutal, though it unfortunately often drags without wings.
