The Willoughbys
The Willoughbys | Lois Lowry
13 posts | 27 read | 22 to read
Abandoned by their ill-humored parents to the care of an odious nanny, Tim, the twins, Barnaby A and Barnaby B, and their sister, Jane, attempt to fulfill their roles as good oldfashioned children. Following the models set in lauded tales from A Christmas Carol to Mary Poppins, the four Willoughbys hope to attain their proscribed happy ending too, or at least a satisfyingly maudlin one. However, it is an unquestionably ruthless act that sets in motion the transformations that lead to their salvation and to happy endings for not only the four children, but their nanny, an abandoned baby, a candy magnate, and his long-lost son too. Replete with a tongue-in-cheek glossary and bibliography, this hilarious and decidedly old-fashioned parody pays playful homage to classic works of childrens literature.

Watched this tonight, and I had no idea it was based on a satirical book by Lois Lowry! Now I need to read the book.

Great movie, by the way!

AkashaVampie I've been looking at that movie and wondering if I should watch it. I might just give it a try 4y
wanderinglynn I loved the movie too and now want to read the book 👍🏻 4y
Daisey I have this book in my class library but had no idea there was a movie. 4y
alisiakae @AkashaVampie I really liked it. @wanderinglynn my library has it on Hoopla, I just checked it out. 😃@Daisey It's a Netflix original that just came out this year! 4y
Curiouser_and_curiouser I watched this with my young girls recently too, no idea it was a book. Must check it out, thanks. 4y

I loved it. Just an easy and pleasant way to pass the time!

The Willoughby children do not exactly have the parents of the year. While they are away on vacation, a real estate agent is sent to sell their home, and the only adult they have to trust is their nanny. Will they ever have a happy ending?

Even as an adult (and maybe even moreso because of it!), I really appreciated the humor is this book along with each unique character!

cmastfalk I‘ve heard about this one twice this week! 4y

I stayed in my PJ's for the whole #readathon, so I decided to wear my book leggings while I recover from a major readathon hangover. Can you believe I don't feel like reading?! I don't want to do anything; not even look at a book. The tagged book is one I started reading during the 'thon.

NeedsMoreBooks Those leggings look great and comfy. May I know where you bought them from? 5y

I had no idea this fun, quirky book was made into a movie! The story is about parents madly in love with each other...the problem is, they are much less enamored of their children. The children encourage their selfish & generally uninterested parents to travel leaving them in the care of a nanny. Of course things start to go wrong, of course the kids have to decide who really has their best interests at heart, & of course I‘m going to watch it!

Vacation day: 3, books read: 0.... Disney + is deadly to my leisure reading. Hopefully I can stay away from the Christmas movies today.

BeansPage Don't get me wrong though it is so good! Such a good sweet little story and I would never take back reading it for all the world. But once you read it you never forget it. 6y
lesliemarie You guys I still cannot read animal stories because of Where the Red Fern Grows. It wrecked me when I was a kid. I'll be interested to see what you think of it reading it as an adult. 6y

This is the funniest children's (middle school age) chapter book about 3 children abandoned by their no-good parents. It's definitely time for a reread.

Lemony Snicker calls this a parody, a word which in this case means "a short novel mocking the conventions of old-fashioned children's books stuffed with orphans, nannies and long-lost heirs."
I throughly enjoyed it, what with parents trying to get rid of kids and kids trying to get rid of parents.
