Four students discover a manuscript, The Book of Skulls, which reveals the existence of a sect, now living in the Arizona desert, whose members can offer immortality to those who can complete its initiation rite. To their surprise, they discover that the sect exists, and is willing to accept them as acolytes. But for each group of four who enter the rite, two must die in order for the others to succeed.

Mehso-so

There is no doubt that this book is excellent writing! It is basically a story of four college boys off on a road trip to find a hidden monastery that offers eternal life, of course with some qualifiers. It's more of a psychological thriller than a sci fi novel. I enjoyed the alternating narratives very much. The writing is lush, the concept is existential and the underlying quest for immortality compelling. (More in comments 👇🏻)

I'm chugging through this skinny old paperback rather slowly - it's rather existential and the writing and vocabulary is quite dense. It may be only 200 pages long, but this is not a puff read. It very much has something to say and I am enjoying the journey. #currentlyreading
