This is a very interesting book about young people in Germany during the rise of Hitler and into WWII. It looks at many different people. Some of them resisted, while some were heavily invested in the Nazi party and were enthusiastic supporters of Hitler and his policies. It‘s an interesting look at how Hitler recognized the power in getting the the youth involved and indoctrinated at a young age. Terrifying and heartbreaking stories are in here.

Very good read for young readers about Hitler youth, from its creation to the end of the war. We follow some of these young men and women who were part of the Hitler youth, which makes the book more personal. Highly recommend!

SaturnDoo I read this last year ( I think it was last year) and really liked it. Good read😊❤ 6y

I used this text as a building knowledge resource while teaching with Wiesel‘s Night. My 10th graders were fascinated with this detailed and engaging nonfiction book. They had had a hard time grasping how “regular” people would side with Hitler‘s ideals. Bartoletti‘s text inspired some great discussions! #YAWednesday

TheFunkyBookworm Wow I can see how this would spur some great classroom discussion! Great pick! Thank you! 6y

Bartoletti, in the conclusion of Hitler Youth, asks if a despot like Hitler could rise to power again on the backs of young people. She notes only the youth of today could answer that question and asks us to consider, "What are you willing to do to prevent that a shadow from falling over you and others?"

A whole hell of a lot.
