pickGideon Clark evolves from a youth doubting the existence of the Iowa Baseball Confederacy, supposedly a short-lived semipro league that ceased operations in 1908, to a believer trying to prove its existence despite a complete lack of evidence. This is a beautifully written fantasy that drew me in immediately. It‘s enigmatic conclusion, surprisingly, left me with a warm, sentimental feeling. I want reread the closing passages again and again.

This is definitely the wackiest Memorial Day I‘ve experienced. Instead of visiting my family in Iowa for the long weekend, I‘m imaging myself there while reading about the cornfields, the small towns (and the people who live in them) and the power of family (oh yeah, and some baseball too) ❤️🤍💙⚾️
I‘m watching these #wilddelinquents play ball again today. It‘s 104 degrees and we‘ve been at the backfield since 10 (after a 2 hour drive for me) and we‘ll play again in an hour. Hopefully another after that. This is my pitcher, Owen. #juneitselectrifying

Kinsella's mix of magic and sentiment works for me in "Shoeless Joe" and his short stories, but I could never quite fall in line here. For any readers looking to discover Kinsella, who recently passed, I would go with his collection, "The Thrill of the Grass". #baseball
