DrSpalding While you can use picture books for literature circles, most often times read aloud would be a better teaching strategy. You can still foster collaboration and community and promote cooperation during and after read aloud‘s. Students can turn and talk and work in cooperative groups during follow up activities. Laura Candler is a wonderful resource. 4y

John Henry is an amazing Caldecott Award Winning book written by Julius Lester and illustrated by Jerry Pinkney. This book provides the retelling of the African-American tale about a man with great strength and outstanding skills in the art of mountain digging. laurie_jayy UDL 5.1 “Use multiple media for communication” would be great to use because above I‘ve provided many ways to read this book.
EL 20. “List the most important words and phrases you use or plan to use in a presentation on a transparency or on the chalkboard” will be great to use so that students will know what to look for while reading and have clarification on some words that they may run into. 7y

cheyennewilliams While I have not read this adaptation, I do love this particular story. It would be great for teaching students about African American history. I posted about Henry‘s Freedom box which could be utilized to teach the same thing. I think these books could work well together within a unit. (edited) 7y
