The Folded Earth
The Folded Earth: A Novel | Anuradha Roy
6 posts | 2 read | 7 to read
LONGLISTED FOR THE 2011 MAN ASIAN LITERARY PRIZE SHORTLISTED FOR THE HINDU LITERARY PRIZE FOR BEST FICTION 2011 WITH HER DEBUT NOVEL, An Atlas of Impossible Longing, Anuradha Roys exquisite storytelling instantly won readers hearts around the world, and the novel was named one of the best books of the year by The Washington Post and The Seattle Times. Now, Roy has returned with another masterpiece that is already earning international prize attention, an evocative and deeply moving tale of a young woman making a new life for herself amid the foothills of the Himalaya. Desperate to leave a private tragedy behind, Maya abandons herself to the rhythms of the little village, where people coexist peacefully with nature. But all is not as it seems, and she soon learns that no refuge is remote enough to keep out the modern world. When power-hungry politicians threaten her beloved mountain community, Maya finds herself caught between the life she left behind and the new home she is determined to protect. Elegiac, witty, and profound by turns, and with a tender love story at its core, The Folded Earth brims with the same genius and love of language that made An Atlas of Impossible Longing an international success and confirms Anuradha Roy as a major new literary talent.

Just beautiful and wonderful and exquisitely written. It's not a grand book of the kind that are usually lauded as must-reads, but my favourite kind of hidden gem with countless beautiful sentences, a special something that speaks to my heart. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

A few years ago, I bought this at the farmer's market in a blank moment of reading the author's name as Arundhati Roy 🙄. It has sat on my shelf, I read a little bit while I had covid in December, and somehow this Sunday afternoon it has found its way into my heart.

Clare-Dragonfly I admit, I also read Arundhati Roy and had to do a double-take 😆 3y

A good setting and character driven book. The ending felt a little rushed/abrupt to me, but still overall a pick.

Lauredhel Oh I love that cover! 3y
llwheeler @Lauredhel me too! It's totally why I picked this book up in the first place. 3y

#20in4 readathon this weekend, yay! This book (looking so much prettier now that I got the giant sale price sticker off it!) is my physical book to finish, I'm a third through. Then I have 4 ebooks on the go, which is tooo many, so I'd like to finish at least 3 of them. I'll probably start a new audiobook too since I don't have one started right now.

Not setting a time goal, I'll be happy if I can finish 4/5 of my currently reading.
