It has to be said that by modern standards, Hugo was a very “wordy” writer, apt to go off in all sorts of tangents. So there are large sections of this book that could be removed without in any way affecting the narrative.

But when he‘s on his stride, Hugo could definitely write a damn fine story. I‘m not ashamed to admit to had a tear in my eye at the end of this story of love in many forms.
