Seven superb short stories from the bestselling author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The BFG! Meet the boy who can talk to animals and the man who can see with his eyes closed. And find out about the treasure buried deep underground. A cleaver mix of fact and fiction, this collection also includes how master storyteller Roald Dahl became a writer. The recent release of Wes Anderson‘s new short films based on Dahl‘s short stories had me reading up the stories before watching. The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, The Swan, The Rat Catcher, and Poison. Henry Sugar has a melancholy effect, the others are peculiar, dark and unsettling. They‘re all fantastic with brilliant performances. Recommended to watch. 👍

LeahBergen I‘m looking forward to watching these! 1y
erzascarletbookgasm @LeahBergen Enjoy! My favourite is The Swan 😊 1y
CarolynM I was just reading a newspaper article about these films about an hour ago! They sound great. I don‘t know that I‘m a Wes Anderson fan, but I really liked The Grand Budapest Hotel. 1y

julesG I watched Henry Sugar and didn't know there are three more gems waiting for me. Yeah! Thanks! 1y
batsy I haven't read the stories but I agree, the short films are wonderful. My favourite is The Swan, too, and The Rat Catcher is up there for unexpected yikes! So memorable. 1y
rabbitprincess I am definitely watching Henry Sugar! And I agree @CarolynM The Grand Budapest Hotel was great! 1y
sarahbarnes I need to watch these - I love Wes Anderson! His new film Asteroid City is great. 1y
erzascarletbookgasm @CarolynM I‘ll be interested to watch Grand Budapest Hotel. My son likes it too. In fact he‘s the one that introduced me to Wes Anderson, I didn‘t know about him before 😆 1y
erzascarletbookgasm @julesG If you like Henry Sugar and Anderson works, you‘re in for a treat! 1y
erzascarletbookgasm @batsy I wouldn‘t have read the short stories if not for these adaptations. I‘ve only read Dahl‘s children stories, the popular ones. The Rat Catcher is definitely yikes! 🤮 1y
erzascarletbookgasm @rabbitprincess I‘m definitely watching The Grand Budapest Hotel then! I hope you‘ll enjoy Henry Sugar. 1y
erzascarletbookgasm @sarahbarnes Ah, you‘re a fan! I‘m just discovering his works, so quirky and creative. Not sure I‘m a fan yet. 😊 1y

Of these stories, the only ones I liked were The Mildenhall Treasure and The Hitchhiker. The Swan was seriously disturbing. Those kinds of stories make me question the sanity of the author…although after reading about his boarding school experiences it makes a little more sense…

Picked this out bc it was on Trevor Noah‘s recommended list on #GoodReads and despite being a Dahl fanatic as a kid, I never read this one. I see why now as it‘s much more aimed at adults.

My mom saw Trevor Noah book recommendations on Goodreads. We immediately had to buy them.

Mehso-so

This is a meh for me. I think Dahl‘s kids stories are so much stronger than his adult ones.

This was one of his only audiobooks available from my library with no wait. Read for #AuthorAMonth.

ValerieAndBooks Trying to catch up on Litsy! It‘s going to be a busy month! But I‘ve been managing to read this collection of his short stories on the treadmill 5y
Soubhiville @ValerieAndBooks aren‘t his adult works strange? In general I don‘t care for them. With a few exceptions. 5y

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and #Six More is 40 years old. Joke on me: all these years I thought Sixmore was a character. This book is for kids but you should try some of Dahl's short stories for adults.

Been really struggling to read lately. My concentration isn't there - working too hard and lost my reading spark! So anyway I finally picked up a collection of Roald Dahl's short stories and they have filled the void and got me going again! I will be back to full length books in no time 👍🏼

Faded covers, brown pages and masking-taped spines, these #welllovedreads still get plenty of love - my seven year old niece has been devouring them!

GuiltyFeat Oh Henry Sugar. Possibly my favourite short story of all time (closely followed by The Fingersmith in the same collection). 8y

Happy 💯th Roald Dahl!

This quirky collection stands out for me as a fave childhood read. Who wouldn't want to have X-ray vision, or ride on a turtle's back, or discover a Roman treasure hoard in the back yard? 🐢👑

#FunFridayPhoto: Where the Sidewalk Ends was my constant checkout from the school library. I also apparently never returned Henry Sugar to my 5th grade classroom. Oops 😳❤️

[DELETED] 2232195534 Where The Sidewalk Ends- must have read that book to my daughter 100 times. She loved it! 8y
