Fashion Rebels
Fashion Rebels: Style Icons Who Changed the World Through Fashion | Carlyn Cerniglia Beccia
7 posts | 1 read | 18 to read
Get to know the women whove wielded the power of fashion and brought about change with this illustrated biography that features twenty-five of historys most influential fashion icons. Throughout time, daring women have made fashion choices that have altered the course of history. From Marie Antoinette, who wore a hairstyle as large as her presence, to Coco Chanel, who imagined a world without rib crushing corsets and heavy gowns, to Katharine Hepburn, who walked around the studio in her underwear when studio executives refused to let her wear her then-scandalous jeans, these women were mavericks as well as rebellious icons. Their fashion choices mirrored and redefined what it meant to be a woman in their era. They didnt follow trends or cultural conventions, but instead set the course with their own style. Their brave and inventive fashion choices paved the way for female empowerment. Featuring hairstyle tips, DIY projects, inspiration boards that break down each icons style, and illustrated timelines that cover the evolution of pants, skirts, the little black dress, and more, Fashion Rebels: Style Icons Who Changed the World through Fashion invites readers to treat fashion as an act of fearless creativityand even become fashion trailblazers themselves.

This is basically the middle grade/early teen version of "Bad Girls of Fashion" (tagged in comments) that I read a few months ago. A little more general and simply described but still very thorough, with adorable fashion activities for readers to do. Wonderful book to start teaching kids how to learn about their interests in more depth.

andireja Welcome @Figgy ! I'm also beta-testing the android version and wasn't able to post at the beginning either (and had some other buggs...) - posting worked fine a few hours after I reported the problem. Otherwise did you check for an update in the playstore? Solved all my other problems so far! 8y

Another good one from #NetGalley: Fashion Rebels, about how women have used fashion and style as expressions not merely of submission to social rules but of subversion and rebellion. The illustrations are gorgeous too!

candc320 Wow, beautiful cover! 8y
youngreadrshelf I read this one also and thought my students would get a lot out of it! 8y

I worked with this book today and I was initially disappointed to discover illustrations instead of photographs. However, things brightened up when I saw this sketch of Josephine Baker in her infamous banana skirt costume. I always keep St. Louisans in my heart and seeing Josephine definitely brightened up my day today.

thegirlwiththelibrarybag It's a brave woman who wears bananas! 8y
