Jane Goodall is an inspiring human. She explains some of the experiences in her life that have given her hope for humanity and the future in this autobiography.

I‘ll have this in the mail to you tomorrow, Barbara! Thanks for sharing this one. Another successful book exchange!

BarbaraTheBibliophage Sounds good - glad you liked it. And SO glad we did this PBC again this year! 💕 3y

I wondered about this when we read this book for #NForNonfiction and she mentioned that some of the wild chimpanzees got and still had issues from contracting polio crossed over from humans. I‘m guessing it‘s only a matter of time until this effects the few wild primates left. 😢

This arrived yesterday, and I‘m already loving it. The first chapter about her childhood is lovely.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yes, I loved her childhood and her beginnings in Africa. So beautifully described and written! 3y

I loved the first 2/3 of this, the experiences of her young life, the initial wonder of arriving in Africa, and eventually of meeting the Chimpanzees. Such beauty and communion with nature, it was magical to read. The last 1/3 was much harder, it‘s about climate change and species destruction and her reasons for hope, as the title says. However her reasons for hope seem like opportunities missed reading this now in 2021, 21 yrs after publication.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa #NForNonfiction I‘ll get this one off to you in the mail this afternoon or tomorrow (whenever my car comes back from the garage) @tjwill Great read @BarbaraTheBibliophage and @daniwithtea 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I agree with your assessment. And she must have too. There‘s a similar, hopefully updated book coming out soon. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage Yea… I could feel that so bad by the end. It ended with a great little pick me up after 9/11 that I‘m reading 21 years later as we are finally leaving and the Taliban is overrunning the whole country again. It felt pretty bleak, I couldn‘t help thinking of Malala as I‘ve been watching the news reports. And the climate positivity about change as we got a Red Alert this summer..her update will need an update 3y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I feel the stressors also. And everything is just all crazy up in the air right now. I agree, it‘s a hard topic to stay current on. That said, I have an ARC for the new book from the publisher. Happy to send it to you once I‘m done! 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage Great job snagging an ARC. I‘ll decide once I see your review! I love her writing, but not sure I can handle her positivity at the moment (if that makes sense). 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I feel ya. I have to finish it fairly soon, so we shall see … 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage Yes it‘s surreal times when her positivity feels depressing. (edited) 3y

I had to google these after they were mentioned in the book…. Tiny antelope the size of a hare, her description said….google did not disappoint. So cute!!! Look at those eyelashes.

Sorry I‘m taking so long with this book, I‘m stopping to google way too much! @tjwill I promise I‘ll get it finished and off to you this week.

Look at them @daniwithtea & @BarbaraTheBibliophage

This was much darker than I expected in a book about hope, but a good and thought-provoking read. @Riveted_Reader_Melissa it will be in the mail to you tomorrow!

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sounds great… but yes, I‘m guessing things must be pretty dark if you have to right a whole book to explain a reason for hope. 3y

I grew up watching Goodall on NatGeo specials, so this brought back memories. I loved her stories about the chimps of Gombe forest. But this is more than that. She connects nature, spirituality, man‘s humanity ... and our inhumanity ... as well. Written in the late 90s, it‘s a bit dated though.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘m interested to read this one....as a kid I was fascinated by the trio Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, and Birutė Galdikas. 3y
Cinfhen Lovely review and so nice that it included photographs 🥰 3y
alisiakae I was so inspired by Jane Goodall when I was in college! I wanted to be her, until I discovered I prefer to work with the human species (I still question that decision sometimes 🤣). 3y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘m not familiar with Birute but yes, I def connected with the other two back in the day. Hope you enjoy the book! 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen Thanks - there are lots of Chimp pictures! 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft Haha! I can understand how you could question that! 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage I know, I only found out about her kind of by accident. Originally three women were sent out, Goodall (of course Chimpanzees), Fosse (Gorrillas), and Birute was Orangutans. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Trimates 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Hey @daniwithtea - the book should be at your place on Tuesday! 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I did actually look her up! They do make sense all together! 3y

After a few hours reading on my back deck while watering my garden and ?ing these iris, I looked up the author of my current read on IG. Learned that she JUST won this lovely prize given to a living person, “whose exemplary achievements advance Sir John Templeton's philanthropic vision: harnessing the power of the sciences to explore the deepest questions of the universe and humankind‘s place and purpose within it." Just what the book‘s about.

Mr. B was intrigued by my current book choice. So he starts Googling and tells me that the tip of Jane Goodall‘s thumb was bitten off by a chimpanzee in 2008. So now we know! I‘m only up to 1974 in the book and had no idea! 🤪🤣🤪🤣

There are so many lovely passages in this book, I may have to order a hard copy. Highlighting in an ebook is just not the same. In this sentence, she describes standing in the cathedral of Notre Dame when the organ begins to play. “That moment, a suddenly captured moment of eternity, was perhaps the closest I have ever come to experiencing ecstasy, the ecstasy of the mystic.”

It was a little bit too wandering for me at times in theme and intent. However, not having every seen or read anything about Jane Goodall, it was interesting to hear about her life and how spirituality permeated her scientific and life work with animals.

4⭐️

Can Jane Goodall just narrate my entire life? Either way, loved hearing her life story and how she connects her religious beliefs with that of the scientific world. In the last third of the book she really focused on her activism for animal rights. It made me think about how now we have very popular companies like Lush who are wanted because they don‘t test on animals.

A few years ago I visited Nagasaki, the site of the second atomic bomb that ended World War II. Scientists predicted that nothing would grow for at least thirty years... and one little sapling didn‘t even die. It is a big tree today with a thick gnarled trunk that has great cracks and fissures, all black inside. But each spring that tree puts out new leaves. I carry one as a symbol of hope.

Reason for Hope: A Spiritual Journey | Jane Goodall, Phillip Berman

That afternoon, it had been as though an unseen hand had drawn back a curtain and, for the briefest moment, I had seen through such a window. In a flash of “outsight” I had known timelessness and quiet ecstasy, sensed a truth of which mainstream science is merely a small fraction.
