The Impossible Lives of Greta Wells
The Impossible Lives of Greta Wells | Andrew Sean Greer
20 posts | 35 read | 31 to read
It is 1985, and Greta Wells wishes she lived in any time but this one: she has lost her brother to AIDS, her lover Nathan to another woman, and can not seem to go on alone. To ease her sadness, her doctor suggest an unusual procedure, one that opens doors of insight into the relationships in her life, her conflicting affections, and the limitations put on a woman's life. Throughout, Greta glimpses versions of war, history, herself, and the people she loves, and as the procedures come to an end, she realizes she must make a choice: one which will close every door but one, forever.

This story is all about the people around us and the good and bad choices we make. I didn‘t guess the ending-you won‘t either

The synopsis intrigued me, but I didn‘t expect to love it so much. It is one of my favorites this year

janeycanuck Did you read Less by him? I didn‘t enjoy it but the description of this one sounds really good. 3y
Dcueto @janeycanuck I have not, but I was interested in “the confessions of max tivoli.” Really loved this one. 3y

Crazeedi I've not seen this book, but it sounds good! Don't you love books that engage you from the beginning? No pondering should I continue, is it going to get better, etc .. 4y

I didn‘t see the romance in everyone cheating on each other. I didn‘t really relate much to Greta either. Normally I like time travel, but I‘m just not into the world wars or New York I guess. This doesn‘t improve my feelings about ECT for depression.

In The Impossible Lives of Greta Wells, electroshock therapy sends 1985 Greta to another life in 1941 and to yet another during the influenza outbreak of 1918. While there, she discovers the parallel lives she and her loved ones are living in different eras and has to make a choice about which Greta she truly wants to remain.

This book is a fascinating read and a little mind bending. The main character, Greta, travels through different time periods as herself following each shock treatment for depression. This is an enjoyable read looking at how we see ourselves and others when we have the opportunity to change/ redirect our lives.
P. 197"Don't we all have someone we'd like to save from the wreckage?"
P. 231"We can hardly guess the burdens people carry."

'When you were a little girl, madam, was this the woman you dreamed of becoming?' The Impossible Lives of Greta Wells is about a woman dealing with loss and sorrow and through therapy is accidentally transported to her life in different times. Each one seems exciting and better than her's, but each one has its own sorrows to deal with. This quote plays a major role throughout about learning the heal and love yourself.

I wanted to like this more than I did. I loved the concept but got annoyed at Greta's character and actions.

A unique and interesting take on time travel. But more importantly, a novel that makes you think about the life you lead and the choices you make. Beautifully written.

Gulfsidemusing I enjoyed two of his earlier books... both beautifully written. Adding this to my list. 9y
SharonGoforth This is the first book I've read of his. I will definitely read more of them. 9y
Gulfsidemusing I remember liking The Story of a Marriage better than The Confessions of Max Tivoli, but it's been a while... 9y
