Prohibition in Washington, DC: How Dry We Weren't
Prohibition in Washington, DC: How Dry We Weren't | Garrett Peck
4 posts | 1 read
In 1929, it was estimated that every week bootleggers brought twenty-two thousand gallons of whiskey, moonshine and other spirits into Washington, D.C.'s three thousand speakeasies. H.L. Mencken called it the thirteen awful years, "? though it was sixteen for the District. Nevertheless, the bathtub gin, swilling capital dwellers made the most of Prohibition. Author Garrett Peck crafts a rollicking history brimming with stories of vice, topped off with vintage cocktail recipes and garnished with a walking tour of former speakeasies. Join Peck as he explores an underground city ruled not by organized crime but by amateur bootleggers, where publicly teetotaling congressmen could get a stiff drink behind House office doors and the African American community of U Street was humming with a new sound called jazz."

So, I live in DC. We are going to the movies and avoiding the metro and the downtown area. Last night, I accidentally gave directions to a Trump wack-a-doo on my way home from work. He was looking for "Trump Tower," so he could "pay his respects." Ugh. I am avoiding federal DC, and enjoying the "DC as F*ck" portion of the city I love. Maybe I will hit an anti-inauguration concert later. DC is known for its punk bands. Tomorrow, the woman's march.

JEMoutrageous I guess I could stay home and read too. 8y

JEMoutrageous And also realize there is no Trump Tower in DC. There is the Trump Hotel. I guess the guy was going to pay his respects by purchasing a $30 drink at the hotel bar. 8y
Lauren_reading I'm marching in Vegas tomorrow - that may be my sign!!! 8y
JEMoutrageous @LaurenReads It is an excellent sign sign choice. 8y

Great, short read about Prohibition in DC-- the politics and the reality both in the halls of power but also the city in general. DCs experiences were different--bootlegging wasn't controlled by organized crime here like it was in most cities. Props also for looking at how The District's African-American population was effected and placing it in the larger context of changing race relations in the capital. Plus, recipes!

If you think DC "gets spectacular thunderstorms," you've never summered in the Midwest.
