If you want to ruin your holiday spirit, read this book. Groom gave birth to a son when she was 19. She gave the child to her aunt and uncle to raise. The child then dies of leukemia at 14 months of age. 25 years later she still mourns her son & finally speaks to her aunt & uncle about her son who she was never able to see. The story leaps around, there‘s a great deal of alcohol and men mentioned, and it‘s hard keeping up with her timeline. 3/5

DogMomIrene Definitely sound depressing. Great review, though. 2mo

I‘m tackling both of these books at the same time & I‘m feeling overwhelmed. Their childhood & early adult years were so tough. Minka‘s mother so absent. Kelle‘s alcoholism & giving her child up for adoption. Both of them needing to find love/protection from men. It all gives me pause to see how fortunate I am. Leaving home at 16, being pregnant at 18, struggling later on with alcohol, and yet somehow I have 4 incredible kids & 5 grandkids 🔽

Suet624 And we/they all get along. I made it through not graduating from high school, single motherhood, divorces, and yet my sole focus was my kids. I‘m so glad I can look back on my life now with some pride for my accomplishments rather than society‘s view of my failures. (edited) 2mo

Deblovestoread I, too, had a rocky road to where I am today. You should be proud of all you‘ve accomplished in the face of adversity and hardship. Well done! 💜💜💜 2mo

Jas16 You should absolutely be proud how far you have come and the person you are now. I often wish I could talk to my younger self and tell her that things would turn out ok. 2mo
Suet624 @Jas16 I agree that it would be great to speak with my younger self. I do know now, for a fact, that I was safe and protected all along, despite the hardships, and that alone is what I keep wanting to remind my younger self of. 2mo
