The story of a passionate love affair that triggered a revolution. An atmospheric, exuberant novel from the best-selling author of The Postcard, Anne Berest, and her sister, Claire Berest, about love and sex, art and revolution, experimentation and creativity, and three young people who changed the world. The year is 1908, the height of the Belle poque, and a brilliant, young French woman named Gabrile, newly graduated from the most elite music school in Europe, meets a volcanic Spanish artist named Francis. Following a whirlwind romance, they marry and fall headlong into a Paris that is experimenting with new forms of living, thinking, and creating. Soon after marrying Francis, Gabrile meets Marcel, another young artist, five years her junior. Soon, Francis, Marcel, and Gabrile are all involved in a fervent affair that will change the course of art history and redefine the avant-garde.As the Belle Epoque gives way to rebellion and revolution, and the world descends into the devastation of World War I, Francis Picabia, Marcel Duchamp, and Gabrile Buffet revolutionize art and open up new ways of seeing and thinking, along the way posing a vital question for their age and ours: what is the connection between new ways loving and new ways of creating?Moving between Paris, New York, Berlin, Zurich, Barcelona, London, and Saint-Tropez, Gabrile is as audacious, uninhibited, intimate, and unforgettable as its central character, the mercurial, pioneering Gabrile Buffet.

Today is the anniversary of artist Francis Picabia‘s death. Like his critics, I enjoyed his Impressionist work the best.
I do think Gabriële was his and others‘ muse.
I just still wish she had pursued her music ?

JamieArc Huh. I haven‘t heard of him. Thanks for posting! 4w
tpixie @JamieArc I had not either. He‘s supposed to be one of the early cubist painters. We read this for #EuropaCollective because we love the postcard so much. Most, if all have not enjoyed this book as much… It is a somewhat interesting snapshot of the 1910‘s. (edited) 4w

I decided to return to this book and slog through it before the end of the year. This is the restaurant where Gabriële and Francis Picabia dined with their friends before they sailed to America. It‘s still open today! What an exotic façade!

I feel like the authors wanted to put Gabriele out there, for people to know her & how she was a ‘leading figure‘ behind the scenes in the art world at the time, which was depicted well, but also I don‘t think they know enough about her to have made it a ‘worthwhile‘ read. We see her a lot in relation to Picabia etc but I never felt like I knew her (or even wanted to know her really lol). It started off interesting but grew to be so dull to read.

mcctrish She was ahead of her time or out of step with her time and it would be cool to have such a figure in your family tree. Sometimes I wanted more present story - how did they research this, who did they talk to…. It did affect me. I was so mad sometimes - like when Picabia was pissed off he couldn‘t travel First class to New York (edited) 6mo
squirrelbrain Great review! 🩷 6mo

Here we are at the end of June. Happy to open the discussion about Gabriele and welcome all comments. Personally I found this to be one slog of a book. I never found any of these people interesting in the slightest outside of the fact that they‘re the worst parents in history! Gabriele could have been an outstanding musician, but no, she gave up her whole career to cater to her husband. Anybody love this book? ⬇️

BkClubCare Yikes! 6mo
mcctrish I know I would have liked it on audio better. I did enjoy looking up the art work mentioned and I also liked all of the interesting artists they encountered over their lives ( the petty war between Francis and Picasso made me chuckle and I loved hearing about Gabriële and Schiaparelli ) but I was maddened by Gabriële throwing away her freedom and agency on a whoring addict regardless of his talent 6mo

Deblovestoread I didn't get to Gabrielle this month but please add me to the Europa Collective tag list 6mo
GatheringBooks Haven‘t finished it yet - you‘re right, this is more of a slog than the postcard. It sounds more like an art treatise and art history with all these famous names thrown in that the authors assume i know (or care) about, but i have no clue who they are - and they haven‘t really made me care at all. I googled picabia‘s art - truly amazing, but what a despicable human being. This may be a dnf for me with all the art history > memoir vibe. 6mo
tpixie @mcctrish Well said! I second your comments!! I was so looking forward to this after The Postcard. I am still looking forward to the Fall Edition of #EuropaCollective 6mo
Gleefulreader I am still working on this as it just doesn‘t call to me when I sit down to read (and that, in itself, says something after how engaging The Postcard was). I will likely finish only because I hate DNF, but we‘ll see. Looking forward to the fall #europacollective! 6mo
BarbaraBB I was disappointed too. It felt like reading NF. I‘d much more appreciated a book about Gabriele in her role as (absent) mother than in her being the muse and inspiration to an artist I‘m not really interested in. 6mo
CBee @Lesliereadsalot I didn‘t get to this one. Bit of a reading slump 😔 You can keep me on the list though! 6mo
Daisey I appreciate the check-in, but I can‘t keep up with another readalong group. 6mo
Lesliereadsalot No problem! Thanks for the RSVP @Daisey 6mo
lauraisntwilder @mcctrish I did the audio... It didn't help. 🫤 6mo
lauraisntwilder This was barely a novel. It was a personal family narrative and it was too long even for that. I was baffled that the name of the book is Gabriele, but they only focused on her relationship to Picabia and then end the book when their marriage is dissolving. I know they say it's because their grandfather was born, but I think it was really that there wasn't a narrative to the story and they had to stop somewhere. 6mo
Lesliereadsalot We should get t-shirts made up: I made it to the end of Gabriele! @mcctrish @tpixie @BarbaraBB @lauraisntwilder @Gleefulreader @GatheringBooks 6mo
mcctrish @Lesliereadsalot we sure should 6mo
tpixie @lauraisntwilder yes! I wonder how others in the world feel about this book. It‘s a strong example how women lose themselves for a man-she only sees herself as a reflection of them. At the beginning of the book, they write about how she was totally obsessed with music, but maybe she was just totally assessed about getting out of her home & finding a man.She was so quick to drop everything for a man that gave her attention-even a jerk like Francis. 6mo
julieclair I didn‘t get to this one, and after reading the comments, I think I may not bother, lol. While my heart wants to join #EuropaCollective, my brain is asking me if I‘m nuts. 🤪 I am overcommitted with buddy reads already. 😕 So please take me off the tag list, but I‘ll keep up with the hashtag, and may join in occasionally. 💙 6mo

It‘s taking me forever to finish this book 😩 started off invested but it‘s getting a bit boring now. I don‘t want to bail as I‘ve only got a few chapters left but I‘m gonna have to read something more engaging after this! Also confused as it reads like non-fiction but it‘s labelled as fiction 🤔

squirrelbrain I didn‘t love it either, and the (non) fiction thing was confusing. 🫤 6mo
tpixie I‘m really dragging too. I‘m so disappointed. They had to make it fiction because the conversations were construed and some of the emotions that they feel her construed. They used facts where they could, but interposed it with their creative writing. Similar to 6mo
TrishB I just thought it was meh. 6mo

youneverarrived @tpixie it sounded so promising! Ah I see, so factual events but made up conversations etc. I‘ve not read The Postcard yet but only heard great things about it. 6mo
tpixie @youneverarrived I enjoyed the postcard much better. Gabriële makes a few cameos in that and is helpful , but you know she and her husband are terrible parents#. I was prepared for that, but I still was hoping they both would be more likable. I‘m only on chapter 10. I‘m really dragging my feet. 6mo

#EuropaEditions are usually hits for me but this one fell short. I also had such high hopes after loving The Postcard by the same author (one of the two). I just couldn‘t get over how selfish the titular character was presented…by her great grandchildren no less! Obsessed with her husband and they‘re both into the art scene around the turn of the century but totally uninterested in their offspring. Lots of name dropping and little parenting.

BarbaraBB That last sentence says it all 🤣 6mo

This book begins in 1908 in Paris, where Gabriele Buffet begins her adult life. She has a lifelong relationship with Francis Picabia, painter and poet, marries him and has four children with him. She has other relationships with Marcel Duchamp, Igor Stravinsky, Elsa Schiaparelli to name a few. Picabia is a horrible husband (many affairs) and a horrible father (never thinks about the kids for one minute). Hard to say why she stays with him ⬇️

Lesliereadsalot The whole book I‘m yelling at her “Get rid of this guy!!” She never can and this book is all about her cavorting with him all around Europe and the US. Not much dialogue which always drives me crazy. Not even a particularly interesting person. So there you have it. Will be happy to discuss at the end of the month when anyone who wants to read it will be done. #EuropaCollective @tpixie @BarbaraBB 6mo
tpixie @Lesliereadsalot I think we are all a little frustrated and sad especially after reading The Postcard… 6mo

kspenmoll Well, should i bother?! 6mo
Lesliereadsalot Yes, thanks to @tpixie The paintings were very interesting. I googled him to see more and they were kind of…meh. @mcctrish 6mo
mcctrish @kspenmoll I bought the book so I‘m finishing it but I‘d probably bail otherwise 6mo
tpixie @Lesliereadsalot @TheBookHippie @BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain @Cathythoughts @mcctrish @kspenmoll Like @mcctrish I bought the book & will complete it, but no one should feel compelled to finish unless they want to. I knew going in from The Postcard that I didn‘t like Francis or Gabriële (or their son Vincente even), but I was curious about their stories. I was hoping that with more of their backstories, I might have more sympathy for them. But no… (edited) 6mo

I liked this but I struggled with whether it was a novel or NF. I didn‘t like the authors‘ comments at the end of each chapter, they really drew me out of the ‘story‘.

I also found it frustrating that they kept saying ‘we don‘t know anything about Gabriële‘s life‘ - not in the past tense ‘we didn‘t know but we‘ve learned‘ but in the present so it read like ‘we still don‘t know‘.

A soft pick for me.

Lesliereadsalot I‘m halfway through this one, not loving it. Also not interested in the authors‘ comments, so misplaced! @squirrelbrain @BarbaraBB #Europacollective @tpixie (edited) 6mo
tpixie @Lesliereadsalot @squirrelbrain the comments do abruptly pull you out of the story. I‘m slow reading. I find the characters are not likable. But some of the information has been interesting. But it certainly is not moving me like the postcard did. (edited) 6mo
BarbaraBB Great review. I didn‘t find the author‘s comments as annoying as you and @Lesliereadsalot did but I just didn‘t think Gabriele that interesting. To her great granddaughters alright, but to us? 6mo

I have mixed feelings about this book. I loved reading it because it is so well written and I was intrigued by the main characters and the way they chose to live their lives. However, there‘s been written a lot about the art scene in Paris; parts of the book felt to me like I‘d read them before.
I‘d wanted to read more about Gabriele and Francis themselves instead of them crossing all over Europe and NYC ⬇️

BarbaraBB Then again, I loved the ending of the book. It‘s so sad. I wish we knew what went on in Gabriele‘s head. Looking forward to discuss the book! (edited) 7mo

tpixie @Tamra I‘m sorry you can‘t join, but we can look forward to more #europacollective in September with @Lesliereadsalot & @BarbaraBB ! (edited) 8mo
BarbaraBB That‘s such a good idea @tpixie @Lesliereadsalot ! We can read this one in June (although I can‘t find a publication date yet for where I live so I hope to be able to get a copy in time) as a kick-off for the #EuropaCollective in September 💃💃 8mo
tpixie @BarbaraBB I don‘t know where you live but interestingly, when I bought it through bookshop.org it came to me a couple weeks before the publishing date! I think they charged shipping though. 8mo
BarbaraBB I am in The Netherlands. 8mo
Deblovestoread I‘m in! And thrilled about the revival of #EuropaCollective ❤️ 8mo
squirrelbrain I‘m in - my copy arrived today! I‘m very excited to hear about the relaunch of the #europacollective @BarbaraBB @Lesliereadsalot (Barbara, if you can‘t get hold of it through bookshop.org, let me know and I‘ll buy a copy here and send it to you) 8mo

GatheringBooks That photo looks fierce! Stacked! 9mo
tpixie @GatheringBooks yes- those sisters are fiercely gorgeous. Those expressions!! The cover is beautiful! We plan to do a #buddyread in June- to give people time hopefully to get the book🩷🖤🩷 Wish I could get to NYC to see them (edited) 9mo

TheKidUpstairs I'd love to do a buddy read! May would probably be best for me, I'm first on my library's hold list, but the book doesn't get released here until April 22. 9mo
Deblovestoread Yes, please! And May would be great. I can‘t wait to read this book with you all. 9mo
Lesliereadsalot Count me in! 9mo
mcctrish May please, I‘m the same release date wise as @TheKidUpstairs 9mo
Chelsea.Poole I loved The Postcard! I‘ll see if I can get my hands on this to join in 😊 9mo
CBee @tpixie I still very much want to read The Postcard! May or June would be best for me if you end up organizing this ♥️ 9mo
squirrelbrain Yes please! It‘s got an April 22nd release date here in the UK too. 9mo
youneverarrived I‘d join in! 9mo
kspenmoll I would love to join in! 9mo
tpixie @TheKidUpstairs @Deblovestoread @Lesliereadsalot @mcctrish @Chelsea.Poole @CBee @squirrelbrain @youneverarrived @kspenmoll Sounds Great! I got confused on the release date because Bookshop.org has already sent me a notice that it‘s been shipped. But you‘re right it doesn‘t come out until April 22. Since it‘s being released late in the month, do you think it‘ll be easier for everybody to have the book by June instead of May? Decisions!! 😅 9mo
mcctrish I‘m fine with June 9mo
Lesliereadsalot I like June 9mo
lauraisntwilder I'm in! May or June, either one. 9mo
