Fire | John Boyne

On the face of it, Freya lives a gilded existence, dancing solely to her own tune. She has all the trappings of wealth and privilege, a responsible job as a surgeon specialising in skin grafts, a beautiful flat in a sought-after development, and a flash car. But it wasnt always like this. Hers is a life founded on darkness. Did what happened to Freya as a child one fateful summer influence the adult she would become or was she always destined to be that person? Was she born with cruelty in her heart or did something force it into being? In Fire, John Boyne takes the reader on a chilling, uncomfortable but utterly compelling psychological journey to the epicentre of the human condition, asking the age-old question: nurture or nature?

Well I‘m not working as I‘m poorly 🤒 winter ❄️ bugs here In UK 🇬🇧 plus I mixed a lot in December ! Anyway that means time to be cosy with my fur babies/ twins and binge read book 3 the brilliant 🤩 fire.Equally as disturbing but so well written don‘t be put off ! How characters are linked from each novella to the next is masterful im just sad about poor old Evan‘s outcome. Anyway now we have to wait until May for book 4 Aaron‘s story……..

Bookbuyingaddict ….. I‘m just hoping that out of all the characters Aaron turns out to be the good guy of the bunch . Writing about the dark side of human nature and just had plan evil humans can be is not easy and we see these crimes all around us which breaks my heart, but John Boyne has a way of writing that makes it gripping and necessary in explaining these traits.how do we find out about human nature and different life‘s if we don‘t read ? Highly recommend (edited) 2d
Tamra Feel better soon! Lots of bugs to go around. 2d

AmyG Feel better! Everyone is sick here in the US too. And I read this out of order, sadly, but so so good. Boyne is a treasure. The man can write anything. (edited) 2d
BarbaraBB Great review. And I do hope the same for Aaron. He seems decent… 2d

Unputdownable again, the third book in Boyne‘s Elements series. We met Freya shortly in Earth, where she sat in a jury. Now it‘s her by herself. A doctor at the burn unit. You wonder why she chose this specialization.

It‘s so dark. I can‘t say much more. Just read it. And be prepared.

Bookbuyingaddict Ooohhhh Iv just finished water and earth in 2 days and blinking loved 🥰 them can‘t wait to start this one 3d
squirrelbrain It‘s *very* dark isn‘t it? 3d
AmyG Oops…I am reading this now (before Land). Dark is an understatement. But very good. 3d

thecheckoutstack My library doesn‘t carry any of them!!! I‘m going to have to buy Water, I loved The Hearts Invisible Furies from John Boyne 3d
Cathythoughts Great review 👍🏻 I‘m looking forward to it. 2d
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain @AmyG What is a superlative of “dark” because indeed, that would fit better! 2d
BarbaraBB @thecheckoutstack I hope you‘re able to pick them up somehow. They are so good and I too loved 2d
BarbaraBB @Bookbuyingaddict I hope you‘ll read it soon, I was sorry I didn‘t remeber Evan‘s story clearly, which is referred to 2d
squirrelbrain Sinister maybe, but even that‘s not ‘enough‘ 🤷‍♀️ 2d
Suet624 Looking forward to it… I think. 2d
Bookbuyingaddict Oh my goodness 😱Iv literally just finished this - wow 🤩 it was fantastic writing , again a disturbing 😳 topic (I am so lucky 🍀 Iv never met any characters like this in my lovely life ! ) I‘m sooo glad I read the 3 published already back to back as each story is linked and now we have to wait until May for Aaron‘s story - I do hope he is a good guy ! And blimey Rebecca from book one his girlfriend that was a shocker ! Happy reading x x 2d
BarbaraBB @Bookbuyingaddict That is much better, to read them back to back. I didn‘t remember Rebecca from Water. Did you @squirrelbrain @AmyG ?? 2d
AmyG I did remember Rebecca. I like the connections. I am going to start Earth and I just hope that I don‘t regret reading them out of order. 2d
AmyG @Bookbuyingaddict Yes. Rebecca was a nice shock! 2d
squirrelbrain No I didn‘t remember Rebecca either! 😬 2d

Didn‘t start the year with an easy read, a short, but not easy read. The main character in this book is absolutely horrible. Do you use your childhood experiences for good or bad? You become a doctor, but why? You separate good people from bad people, but totally on your own terms, but why? Read the book to find out! Always appreciate that Boyle does not stay away from taboo.

TrishB Yes, v nasty person. 1w
Tove_Reads @TrishB I find these to be the worst, thinking they have the right to distinguish if others are good or bad according to their own rules. 1w

And with this book, I‘ve read three out of four. To say that I can‘t wait for Air would be a massive understatement. Every book in this series is special, but Fire was much darker and a bit more unsettling. How is John Boyne so brilliant? I‘d probably burst into tears if I met him in person 😂♥️

AmyG Ooooooooo excited to read this. 2w
TrishB I have met him 😁 the university where I work- the Irish Studies centre did the launch of Hearts…. I‘d highlighted all the bits I enjoyed best in the book and he was really interested in why!! 2w
CBee @AmyG did you finish Earth? I can‘t remember 🤯 But yes, this one is also SO good. I wish there were more than four elements 😂 He could write a book about cardboard and I‘d read it ♥️ 2w

CBee @TrishB EEEEEEEK!!! I wouldn‘t be able to speak. God, Hearts ♥️♥️ To this day that remains one of the best books I‘ve ever read. 2w
sarahbarnes I must read him soon!! 2w
AmyG @TrishB That is awesome. @CBee I have only read Water. 2w
CBee @sarahbarnes *gasp* YES! You must. This series is incredible, but I‘ll tag the one that got me hooked: 2w
CBee @AmyG can‘t wait until you get to Earth and then Fire. Gosh these are so good. 2w
Amiable @sarahbarnes Oh, I second @CBee ‘s recommendation—of the author and the book! 2w
CBee @Amiable ♥️♥️♥️ 2w
peaKnit I love his stuff! I need to read these! (edited) 2w
CBee @peaKnit yes, you do! 😊 2w
peaKnit Can I ask, did you buy the books online? My library is a no go and they seem limited release on US. I forgot about these - he is one of my must read authors (love the accents on audio:)). Thanks!! 2w
sarahbarnes I put Hearts on hold at the library today! 😁 Somehow I‘ve never read it. @CBee @Amiable 2w
CBee @peaKnit I actually requested all of them through my library and they ordered them for me 😊 I know that Blackwell‘s sells them - they‘re in the UK but ship free to the US! 2w
CBee @sarahbarnes ohhh I hope you love it! 2w
peaKnit Thank you! 2w
Amiable @CBee Thank you for the tip about ordering from Blackwell's -- just submitted an order! I can't believe it's free shipping to the U.S.! 😍 2w
CBee @Amiable oh yay! You‘re welcome. The prices aren‘t bad either! 👏🏻 2w
peaKnit Merry Christmas to me, I ordered Water! Thanks again for reminding me of this series🤗 2w
CBee @peaKnit awesome! I hope you enjoy it! 2w
CBee @CSeydel this is the 3rd in the Elements series by Boyne. Just as good if not better than the first two. But oh so dark. 2w
CSeydel Woohoo! 2w

A dark, uncomfortable, but very compelling read.
These have been an excellent series so far, make you think a lot.

BarbaraBB Is it as good as Water and Earth? 2mo
Cathythoughts Oh great ! I just got that one 👍🏻❤️ 2mo
TrishB @BarbaraBB I think so! Though even darker. 2mo

Another excellent addition to Boyne‘s ‘Elements‘ series of books, this time about a plastic surgeon, dealing with burns victims.

Again, like Water and Earth, a very tough subject matter. I love how we get little hints and links to the other books in the series.

I still think the first book is my favourite, but they‘re all so good and I‘m already looking forward to Air, with an idea about which character it will be about.

Out 7th Nov (UK)

BarbaraBB Sounds so good again! I need to preorder this one! Doesn‘t it mention on the final page who the next book will be about? 4mo
Megabooks It does in the print @barbarabb. I think Helen may have a digital ARC. I finished Earth today, and It was really good. I was gutted. I give Water a slight edge. I still love Heart\'s Invisible more, but these are totally on par with my second favorite Boyne, A History of Loneliness, which was a gift from B one year! 😘 😘 4mo
squirrelbrain Yes, it did say at the end @BarbaraBB @Megabooks but I‘d worked it out anyway, based on the job of one of the characters in this book. 🤔 4mo
BarbaraBB @Megabooks my favorites are the same as yours Meg and I also think I (so far) love The Heart‘s Invisible more but maybe that‘ll change! 4mo
