The Witch of Colchis
The Witch of Colchis: A Novel | Rosie Hewlett
4 posts | 2 read | 5 to read
For readers of Costanza Casati and Circe comes an evocative tale of love, murder, and magic following one of the most powerful and maligned women in Greek myth. Meet Medea like you've never known her before - a woman with improbable skill and the softest heart, held back by men who could never dream to deserve her. A disgraced daughter. A fearsome witch. A woman more myth than mortal. Medea, princess of Colchis, longs for a different life. Since childhood, she has been shunned from her family, tormented by her people, and treated with shame. All because of a unique and dangerous talent: witchcraft. But when a dashing young hero, Jason, arrives to claim the famed Golden Fleece, Medea sees her opportunity for escape. Her offer to help Jason sets in motion a journey that will test every ounce of strength, magic, and loyalty she has. A journey that will see her battle monsters, dethrone kings, and confront a love more brutal than any before. A journey that will ultimately end in betrayal, bloodshed, and a dark power impossible to forget.

Medea. Sorceress. Witch. Kin slayer. Medea‘s story is usually written by the victors. It‘s time for her to tell her own story.

Loved this! Such strong characterization! I totally believed that this Medea would make the choices she did. & her magic use was interesting to explore. & the inclusion of Atalanta!

I didn‘t like the 10 year skip. It seems like every Medea retelling skips that, & I want to see more exploration of that time. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

5/5⭐ I received an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

This Medea is a fully realized character that pays homage to her place in ancient Greek literature but also speaks to a modern audience. The book is a compelling combination of magic, action, relationships, introspection, & character growth (albeit in an atypical direction). #bookspin

“Were we not exiled because you lost in combat against your cousin?” I counter, my voice lethally calm. I turn my attention to Aegeus. “I was unconscious at the time. It was, in fact, the only time Jason was left to face his foe alone. Quite the coincidence.”

Girl, SLAY.

The women of Corinth ogle Jason. He is still deemed a valiant hero in their eyes, yet his victories were born from the same bloodshed that makes me a villain.
