A new mom in need of help opens her door to her long-estranged motheronly to invite something much darker insidein this "fast-paced and frightening debut" (Rachel Harrison) about the long shadows cast by family secrets, perfect for readers of Grady Hendrix or Ashley Audrain. Flora is a new mom enamored of her baby girl, Iris, who has arrived a few weeks early. But with her husband still deployed, Flora must navigate the newborn stage alone. As the sleepless nights pass in the loneliness of their half-empty home, the edges of her reality begin to blur. Just as Flora becomes convinced she is losing her mind, a surprising guest shows up to help: Floras own mother, to whom she hasnt spoken in years. Can they mend their fraught relationship? Or is there more that Floras mother isnt telling her about the events that led to their estrangement? As stranger and scarier events unfold, Flora begins to fear that her mothers secrets have allowed something truly evil to enter her home. She must decide: is her hold on reality slipping dangerously away? Or is she, in fact, the only thing standing between a terrifying visitor and her baby?

I liked this one a lot. The creep factor was different. What i like the most is that the story was nicely tied up at the end. No cryptic ending! I do think that if you‘ve ever dealt with or are dealing with postpartum that this book could be triggering because it does deal with some of those feelings and situations of having a newborn.

The due date is looming over my head on this one! I have 3 days left to read it so I hope it‘s a quick read.

This book was too weird for me. Since I had fun reading Nightbitch and this book gave me those vibes I‘m going to attribute mood reading issues as to why this gets a so-so rather than a pick. It‘s a wild read as the reader figures out what is real and not for this new mother, and who is good and not. I needed to go all in to enjoy this but couldn‘t find my way.

But in other happenings Go Chiefs for all who celebrate ♥️💛🏈

Chelsea.Poole We are rooting for the Chiefs tonight too! 🟡🔴 3w
marleed @Chelsea.Poole The first half was brutal, but hopefully they pull it together for a fun ending. 3w
Chelsea.Poole It sure was. Hard to watch! 3w
marleed @Chelsea.Poole It was a tough one but I am satisfied the Eagles deserved this win and completely outplayed the Chiefs. 3w
Chelsea.Poole They sure did! That defense was 🔥!! 3w

I‘ll tell ya, as a new mom, I‘ve never felt more seen than in the early pages of this book😂

This is somewhat of a convoluted ghost story. The premise is interesting but some of the ending is a bit much. Flora has just had her first child and is having some supernatural postpartum psychosis issues.

This was a fairly good, fast thriller. My family is down with the flu this week, so our Thanksgiving plans were pretty much cancelled. I work tomorrow a half day (work from home), then probably another chill day at home. On the bright side, I will get some more reading in.

I read this last month. It‘s a solid horror novel. The tone is sort of V.C. Andrews meets postpartum psychosis. #BOTM

This debut novel quickly becomes impossible to put down! Mother horror has become a recent sub-genre & though this reminded me of a few other books, I still stayed up to finish in one sitting! With her husband deployed, Flora gives birth alone & though her dad & stepmother stay for a short time initially, Flora‘s isolation & sleep deprivation starts weighing on her, bringing back episodes from her own childhood, body horror & an uncanny visitor.

This story follows a new mom who, out of necessity, invites her estranged mother into her home, only to discover that old wounds run deep and sinister events soon unfold, blurring reality.

Fast-paced, chilling, psychologically suspenseful with dark secrets slowly unraveling and the line between reality and nightmare blurring with every page - UNPUTDOWNABLE!
