Tell Freedom | Peter Abrahams
2 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
In this classic autobiography Peter Abrahams tells of his childhood and youth in the slums of Johannesburg and the country around it. He recounts how he gradually wins education, risking his health in the process, then begins to write and finally he is forced to leave for England in an attempt to find a way of life where the colour-bar does not permanently stifle his growth.

RIP. This one hits close to home for me in that I studied his novel Tell Freedom in high school and it instilled in me a deep and lifelong interest in the antiapartheid movement and South African literature. He lived a long life but if his death was foul play that's just sickening.

Novels I studied in high school in small-town Saskatchewan in the 80s. I had 2 English teachers, Mr. Roberts and Mr. Powley, who hated each other. Mr. R. taught grades 9-11, deepening my love of fiction and awakening my social consciousness. Welsh, he was infamous for refusing to stand when God Save The Queen was played. Staid, unmarried & religious, Mr. P. taught the Ross novel so uptightly I had no idea it was about adultery.

BookHermit Fellow Saskatchewaner! 👍👏🏻👍 8y
BookHermit No one graduates from high school in Saskatchewan without reading 8y
shawnmooney @BookHermit Sweet! I grew up at Plenty, between Rosetown and Kindersley where my dad still farms. Went to the U of S in Saskatoon 84-88 and 91-93. I didn't catch on to the Ross novel until I studied it again in university… LOL 8y

BookHermit For sure! I have to admit I hadn't heard half of these terms until I moved out here. For the first couple of years people were always asking me if I was from Toronto 😂 8y
