My choices are definitely more of the classic variety. Need to read some new CanLit soon.

Next up for #7booksin7days is a #CanLit classic by Sinclair Ross.

I always think of CanLit as being incredibly dour and bleak. This book is both of those things but it somehow transcends them to become a beautiful, sad story about people frustrated by their circumstances and struggling to connect.

Re-reading it 3 decades later, the novel‘s near-Gothic over-the-topness put me off. A desperately unhappy preacher and his miserable wife crap all over each other and—heaven forbid—are actually allowed near children. And the town‘s buildings have evil false fronts, evil I tell you; the manse is a cramped, leaky prison; the wind and rain are also evil; those false fronts and that prison and the wind and the rain and those false—just shoot me now!
