The Summer Pact
The Summer Pact: A Novel | Emily Giffin
7 posts | 9 read | 6 to read
In the wake of tragedy, a group of friends makes a pact that will cause them to reunite a decade later and embark upon a life-changing adventure togetherfrom the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Meant to Be. Four freshmen arrive at college from completely different worlds: Lainey, a California party girl with a flair for drama; Tyson, a brilliant scholar and aspiring lawyer from Washington, D.C.; Summer, an ambitious, recruited athlete from the Midwest; and Hannah, a mild-mannered southerner who is content to quietly round out the circle of big personalities. Soon after arriving on campus, they strike up a conversation in their shared dorm, and the seeds of friendship are planted. As their college years fly by, their bond intensifies and the four become inseparable. But as graduation nears, their lives are forever changed after a desperate act leads to tragic consequences. Stunned and heartbroken, they make a pact, promising to always be there for one another, no matter how separated they may become by circumstances or distance. Ten years later, Hannah is anticipating what should be one of the happiest moments of her life when everything is suddenly turned upside down. Calling on her closest friends, it soon becomes clear that they are all facing their own crossroads. True to their promise, they agree to take a time out from lives headed in wrong directions and embark on a shared journey of self-discovery, forgiveness, and acceptance. In this tender portrayal of grief, love, and hope, Emily Giffin asks: When things fall apart, who will be at our sides, helping us pick up the pieces?

Bailedbailed

I used to really like Emily Giffin‘s books. But her last book and now this one I find myself asking why am I wasting time with these people. Not sure which of us changed, but I‘m done. I did read 100 pages, about a third, but I still wasn‘t interested in the girl who finds her soon-to-be husband cheating and her two best friends from college.

AmyG I used to like her books, too. Sad to read this. 3mo
Lesliereadsalot Compared to the terrific books you and I have read lately, this didn‘t even feel like a good beach read! @AmyG 3mo

This book was just ok for me. It hit on a few things that are current and made the story more realistic. It had some subtle political things that were pretty much spot on. It dealt with friendships and loss. Suicide and betrayal. Things that don't receive a lot of attention in books sometimes.

Pickpick

This was sort of a quality rollercoaster—stretches that were good, boring, unpleasant, [one year later], HEA. Between pick and so-so. [Full review to come . . . hopefully.]

It took me a minute to really connect with the characters, but once I did I did not want stop reading. This friendship story felt more like Giffin's earlier novels where you enter the character's world instead of the characters being part of current events.

This story begins with tragedy after one member in a foursome of BFFs dies by suicide, but then a sweet story of enduring friendships prevails. I really enjoyed reading it.

AmyG I am glad to hear this is good as I enjoy her books. 5mo
TheBookgeekFrau I'm reading it now 😊 5mo
marleed @AmyG On the outset and despite the cover, I thought it was going to be one of EG‘s heavier reads, but it turned out to be more of a beach read. And that matched my current mood! 5mo
marleed @TheBookgeekFrau I hope you‘re enjoying it! 5mo
