Happy #summerween to all who celebrate. 💀👻🎃
This was body horror, magic realism, and a love story all mixed in to create a quirky read! Taking place in a little Scottish town, Muriel (an 84 yo, widowed woman) and the few other elderly folk left in her community are fighting the destruction of their homes by a greedy American company. When all of their efforts have failed and all hope seems lost, Muriel finds a creature laid out on a rocky beach, and things start to get interesting!
My friend practically threw this book at me and I am SO GRATEFUL! This is a gem of indie horror fiction and I want to read everything else Sodergren has written.
An elderly Scottish lady refuses to leave her home, even as her village is razed by an American billionaire to build a resort. One day, she finds a gelatinous creature on the shore and everything changes.
It made me feel things. I was enraged, moved, disgusted, and entertained.
Does this book have crazy body horror inflicted by an ancient gelatinous sea creature? Yes. But it also has a wee old Scottish lady living in a dying seaside village that‘s being turned into a golf course as she fights for her home and reminiscence about her late husband and the life they built together. Muriel can‘t be bought and holds onto her land as threats get increasingly more violent. This book was surprisingly sweet and gave me the feels
This was a great, very gross, entertaining folk horror story. I would recommend not knowing much in advance, just note that has some very gnarly body horror. If you are a horror movie fan-I definitely recommend. 5⭐️
