A stunning debut novel set in the rugged, rural landscape of northwest England where two sheep farmers lose their flocks and decide to reverse their fortunes by stealing sheep from a rich farm in the south--for fans of Annie Proulx and Cormac McCarthy. In early 2001, a lethal disease breaks out on the hill farms of northern England, emptying the valleys of sheep and filling the skies with smoke as they burn the carcasses. Two neighboring shepherds lose everything and set their sights on a wealthy farm in the south with its flock of prizewinning animals. So begins the dark tale of Steve Elliman and William Herne. As their sheep rustling leads to more and more difficult decisions, the struggles of the land are never far away. Steve's only distraction is his growing fascination with William's enigmatic and independent wife, Helen. When their mountain home comes under the sway of a lawless outsider, Colin Tinley, it is left to Steve to save himself and Helen in a savage conflict that threatens the ancient ways of the Lakeland fells. Told in the hardscrabble voice of a forgotten England, Scott Preston creates an uncompromising vision of farmers lost in brutal devotion to their flocks, the aching love affairs that men and women use to sustain themselves, and the painful consequences of a breathtaking heist gone bad. The Borrowed Hills is a thrilling adventure that reimagines the American Western for Britain's moors and mountains where survival is in the blood.

Amazing this is a debut novel! It feels like a bit of a mashup between a traditional American Western & an organized crime novel, but set in contemporary rural NW England. As odd as it sounds, it works. Gritty and sometimes gruesome, yet there is also the natural beauty of the fells.

Thanks @Cathythoughts for your post. Had it not been for you I would have bypassed it because of the cover. 😜

Cathythoughts Great review! I loved it. I loved the nature descriptions , the lifestyle of working with the sheep, the hardness and solitary nature of it. The passion felt for it. And what about Rusty in the end ! I cried. It‘s an image that has stayed with me. I thought it a powerful book. One I‘ll remember. Strong stuff. 3w
Tamra @Cathythoughts oh yes, such distinctive voices that the novel highly memorable - agreed! I wasn‘t sure exactly how to interpret the end, it was so unexpected! Does it symbolize his death, death of a dream, beginnings, or hope? Does it represent being lost to or an inextricable bond to the land? It seems to be a sacrifice. It was so sad. I want a physical copy for my shelves. 3w
Tamra I will be on the lookout for whatever he writes next. 3w

Cathythoughts I‘m not sure what it means, all you say is true I think. Rusty was part of him and I wasn‘t expecting to ever see him again. I got a huge shock ! That image broke my heart. 3w
Cathythoughts Im so glad you liked it and got it too. My husband read it too and while he really enjoyed it , he didn‘t have the same emotional experience I did. But he agreed it was special. 3w
Cathythoughts I‘m looking forward to his next book too 👍🏻❤️ 3w

#12Booksof2024 I think I read this in JUNE. It‘s one of my favorites of the year, a memorable story. Violent at times , set in Cumbria about shepherds and sheep… I loved it. It really got to me. I hope someone reads it soon so we can compare notes.

squirrelbrain I hope to get to it soon! ❤️ 4w
Cathythoughts @squirrelbrain Oh Helen ! No pressure 😂 ❤️ 4w
Tamra Oh yes, I remember stacking this one after your review! I was just now able to borrow the audio. 😁 (edited) 4w
Cathythoughts @Tamra Really! I wonder who narrates, I hope the accent is good 😊 4w
Tamra @Cathythoughts David Crellin - so far it‘s great! (Though I wouldn‘t be able to distinguish regional accents.) 4w

“A sucker-punch of a novel, set in Cumbria, shot through with moments of startling beauty, but little hope”.
A story of sheep farming,of the foot-and-mouth disease in 2001.
It‘s hard to say why I loved this so much …authentic …
the writers bond with the land. He takes you there , in all its beauty and terror and violence.
I never thought I could get so engrossed in a book about shepherds and sheep.

Stunning writing. Brilliant.

squirrelbrain Great review! I‘ve been wavering about this one, but you‘ve convinced me! 6mo

Cathythoughts @squirrelbrain @Tamra @andrew61 @Aimeesue I did love it. But I will say there were some violent scenes that I had to skim a bit. One reviewer made a comparison to Tarantino. I wonder will it make the Booker long list. I hope so. 6mo
Cathythoughts @squirrelbrain And there‘s an interesting ending too Helen. 😁 6mo
squirrelbrain Yes, I was wondering if it might make the Booker long list too. 🤔 6mo
