I'm Mostly Here to Enjoy Myself
I'm Mostly Here to Enjoy Myself: One Woman's Pursuit of Pleasure in Paris | Glynnis MacNicol
4 posts | 4 read | 8 to read
When youre a woman of a certain age, you are only promised that everything will get worse. But what if everything youve been told is a lie? Come to Paris, August 2021, when the City of Lights was still empty of tourists and a thirst for long-overdue pleasure gripped those who wandered its streets. After New York City emptied out in March 2020, Glynnis MacNicol, aged forty-six, unmarried with no children, spent sixteen months alone in her tiny Manhattan apartment. The isolation was punishing. A year without touch. Women are warned of invisibility as they age, but this was an extreme loneliness no one can prepare you for. When the opportunity to sublet a friends apartment in Paris arose, MacNicol jumped on it. Leaving felt less like a risk than a necessity. What follows is a decadent, joyful, unexpected journey into one womans pursuit of radical enjoyment. The weeks in Paris are filled with friendship and food and sex. There is dancing on the Seine; a plethora of gooey cheese; midnight bike rides through empty Paris; handsome men; afternoons wandering through the empty Louvre; nighttime swimming in the ocean off a French island. And yes, plenty of nudity. In the spirit of Nora Ephron and Deborah Levy (think Colette . . . if shed had access to dating apps), Im Mostly Here to Enjoy Myself is an intimate, insightful, powerful, and endlessly pleasurable memoir of an intensely lived experience whose meaning and insight expand far beyond the personal narrative. MacNicol is determined to document the beauty, excess, and triumph of a life that does not require permission. The pursuit of enjoyment is a political act, both a right and a responsibility. Enjoying yourselfas you areis not something the world tells you is possible, but it is. Heres the proof.

I found this memoir entertaining, focusing on MacNicol‘s experiences in Paris after Covid. She wanted to be touched after years of lockdown and she sure got what she wanted! MacNicol is confident and comfortable in her skin as an over 40 year old woman and happy with her choice to be single and child free. I appreciate that! But also, hard to imagine having the ability to hang out in that expensive city for so long.

Chelsea.Poole Unfortunately, I felt judged for having a husband and kids. Also, kind of rubbed me the wrong way how the author claims she isn‘t active on instagram so others won‘t get jealous and feel FOMO of her life via her amazing posts. Really? (edited) 2mo
Susanita How thoughtful of her to refrain from instagram! 😂 2mo
nanuska_153 I feel that women have been judged for so long for not having kids that society is over compensating and what we are judging now is people who choose to have kids, and there's even a lot of hatred towards kids (?) I don't understand why we can't let people (mainly women) just make their own decisions and live in peace with them. Just because something is right for me doesn't make it right for everyone else, that's just what individuality means. 2mo

I liked the parts about famous women who went to Paris far more than MacNicol's day to day ramblings.

I love books about peoples‘ experiences in France, but I wasn‘t sure this was going to be for me BUT I shouldn‘t have worried. I appreciated her honesty and her being true to herself. Loved it 😊

tpixie This sounds great. What a great opportunity she had! 6mo
