The Five Year Lie
The Five Year Lie: A Domestic Thriller | Sarina Bowen
7 posts | 8 read | 5 to read
"I devoured this book in one day, and I guarantee you will too."--Julie Clark, New York Times bestselling author of The Last Flight and The Lies I Tell "An expertly woven story of love, revenge, and murder. In a world where so many books feel so similar--this was a refreshingly unique read and an addictive blend of love and mystery that I couldn't put down. This is storytelling at its finest and I can't recommend this book enough."--AR Torre, New York Times bestselling author of Every Last Secret Bestselling romance author Sarina Bowen's debut thriller, about one woman's search for the truth after receiving a text from her deceased ex. She thought it was love. Then he vanished. On an ordinary Monday morning, Ariel Cafferty's phone buzzes with a disturbing text message. Something's happened. I need to see you. Meet me under the candelabra tree ASAP. The words would be jarring from anyone, but the sender is the only man she ever loved. And it's been several years since she learned he died. Seeing Drew's name pop up is heart-stopping. Ariel's gut says it can't be real. But she goes to the tree anyway. She has to. Nobody shows. But the text upends everything she thought she knew about the day he left her. The more questions she asks, the more sinister the answers get. Only two things are clear: everything she was told five years ago is wrong, and someone is still lying to her. The truth has to be out there somewhere. To safeguard herself--and her son--she'll have to find it before it finds her. And with it, the answer to what became of Drew. For fans of Laura Dave and Julie Clark, but with a heart-stopping romance that only Sarina Bowen can execute, The Five Year Lie is a page-turning, spine-tingling thriller that will have you guessing until the very end.

Suspense, romance, family betrayal, a lost love. This one was predictable and very much a The Last Thing He Told Me vibe, but I enjoyed getting to know single Mom Ariel on her quest to find out the truth about her son‘s missing Father while also uncovering family secrets. Good Unlimited read!!

-Wow, I loved this! I‘m usually pretty stoked when I find my old love (romance) and my new love (thriller) coexisting and not being overly cheesy.
-Fantastic narration
-I loved the nod to my hometown.
𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐒⇩
-Not a con for me…but if you don‘t like romance in your thrillers then you probably won‘t like this because it‘s romance-heavy.
-Pacing issues…although I wasn‘t affected too much by these, others were.

I really enjoyed this thriller and had trouble putting it down. The story starts with a confusing text from a man she loved, sent five years after he disappeared from her life and several years after she saw an obituary for him. Determined to figure out what happened, both for her and their young son, she finds a series of strange goings on at the family company. The characters, the action and the romance were all very entertaining. 4.5/5 stars!

A text from Drew?

How could that be - he left and has passed away.

Computer geeks and mystery fans will enjoy this book even though it‘s a bit frightening what can be found and hacked.

Lots of secrets, illegal transactions, shady characters, and a few unrealistic but good things that do happen.

This was my first book by this author, and I truly enjoyed it. 4/5

𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐚 𝐁𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐧 is a bestselling author of 24 contemporary romances. Now she has published her debut domestic suspense novel. I received a copy from Bibliolifestyle and Harper Perennial. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐋𝐢𝐞 is a propulsive blend of love & mystery, appealing to readers of both genres. 𝘏𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘺 𝘗𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘋𝘢𝘺! This book sounds sure to keep me engrossed during an upcoming flight! 🛫🌴🌺🌊

Would I call this a mystery? Or a tale of a woman who couldn‘t get over a fling she thought was love? There‘s ghosting &mysterious text msg years later, but honestly, Ariel knew him for 3mths & I would have moved on &ignored the text.

If you can get past how much Ariel obsesses over Drew, then you get a decent mystery. Her family owns Chime & she stumbles onto some possibly illegal activity that may be connected to Drew vanishing.

CarolynM I generally like Sarina Bowen, but this one doesn‘t sound all that appealing to me. I‘ll probably try it anyway. 7mo
Kristy_K @CarolynM I think she normally writes romance and you can tell by how she structured the story. It didn‘t work for me but I think if you like her other novels, then you‘ll like this! 7mo
