The Human Target Volume Two | Tom King
6 posts | 4 read
Christopher Chance has made a living out of being a human target-a man hired to disguise himself as his client to invite would-be assassins to attempt his murder. Hes had a remarkable career until his latest case protecting Lex Luthor, when things go sideways. An assassination attempt Chance didnt see coming leaves him vulnerable and trying to solve his own murder, and he has twelve days to discover just who poisoned him. After discovering clues, the death of a Green Lantern, and a torrid romance with Tora Olafsdotter (a.k.a. Ice), DCs top bodyguard may meet his match when Beatriz da Costa (otherwise known as Fire) steps into his life. Only time will tell what secrets this flaming femme fatale might hold and just how badly the Human Target might get burned. The Human Target is a hard-boiled, gritty story in the vein of classic detective noirs, told by bestselling and critically acclaimed creators Tom King and Greg Smallwood! Collects The Human Target #7-12.

Tom King is undefeated at writing 12-issue miniseries about DC most obscure characters. This one literally started as a joke on Twitter. King's homage to his favorite noir, 1949's D.O.A., is a love story wrapped in a murder mystery. Greg Smallwood's art elevates this story to true beauty.

Might be brightly coloured, but it's definitely a noir detective story under the stylish veneer. Loved the plot development, the characters, the art, even the ending. Sincerely hope I can find more graphic novels like it, where I get introduced to 'heroes' I don't know as well, from a compelling outsider POV.

IloveitIoveIloveit! Got this whole swinging sixties detective story vibe (the art 😍, the narrative style!). It contains a lot of super powered people but you're not seeing them in quite the same light as mainstream comics. The colour palette makes it hard to think of it as noir, but a slightly dimmer view of human/superhero behaviour is on offer. So glad my library has the second volume so I can keep reading, solve the mystery!

I appreciate this nonfatal level of chaos. 😅 ✂️

Just taking a moment to appreciate the colour way, the geometric shapes, and the serendipity of both having 'human' in the title. 💁🏼‍♂️

Tom King took the plot of the 1949 film noir D.O.A.--a poisoned man has to solve his own murder before his inevitable death--and applied it to Christopher Chance a.k.a. the Human Target. Each issue revolves around a different suspect from the Justice League International. To complicate things further, Chance finds himself in a fling with femme fatale Ice, one of the suspects. Smallwood's art perfectly channels the '60s vibe.
