Nethercott very much wears her influences on her sleeves in this collection & that's not always a bad thing. One of my joys this year has been learning of the magical storyteller that is Kelly Link. If there is a presiding saint over this collection it is Link & the stories that reminded me most of Link's own work are my favorites. Such as when students are plotting the demise of the new girl, told in the form of an Abecedarian of Divination. (..)

Short stories aren‘t really my favorite format, but I‘ll read anything GennaRose Nethercott writes with delight and awe. This collection is hauntingly beautiful - enchanting, weird, and deep. They‘re the kind of stories that are so interesting to see what others took from them, the kind that would reveal another layer with each re-read. My favorites were “A Diviner‘s Abecedarian”, “The Thread Boy”, “A Lily is a Lily”, and “Homebody”.
pickThis author has a great imagination. This is short stories. It's like fairy tale horror with humor. Which I appreciate.
